CALIFORNIA (Nov. 3) – In its first post-season game in program history, the No. 16 California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer earned a 2-0 win over Gannon in the quarterfinals of the 2009 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament on Tuesday afternoon at Roadman Park.

With the win, the Vulcans advances to face Kutztown (14-4-2) in the PSAC Semifinals on Friday, Nov. 6, at 1:30 p.m. in West Chester, Pa. Regardless of the outcomes on Friday, West Chester will also host the championship game on Saturday, Nov. 7, at 11 a.m.

Cal U entered the conference tournament as the top seed in the PSAC West after earning the regular-season divisional title. With the win over the fourth-seeded Golden Knights, the Vulcans improve to 16-4-1 overall this year.

After battling to a scoreless first half, Cal U scored both of its goals in a seven-minute span early in the second half. Sophomore Elizabeth Johnston (Munhall, Pa./Steel Valley) scored the eventual game-winning goal in the 57th minute on a header from a corner kick by freshman Kayla Fransko (Monongahela, Pa./Ringgold). At the 63:24-mark, junior forward Sam Regney (Monaca, Pa./Monaca) added an insurance goal when she scored an unassisted breakaway goal – her eighth of the season.

Sophomore goalkeeper Paula Jackson (Kingston, Jamaica/Wolmer's Trust) registered her ninth shutout of the season after making three saves on nine shots. Meanwhile, senior Sabrina Chirco finished with 12 saves in the loss.

The Vulcans out-shot the Golden Knights by a 21-9 margin, including a 13-6 edge in the second half. Cal U also held a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
