CALIFORNIA (Nov. 10) – After dropping the first set on Tuesday night, the California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team rallied to a 3-1 win (21-25, 25-15, 25-15, 25-14) over Gannon at Hamer Hall in the quarterfinals of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament.

The Vulcans improve to 31-5 this season and will now play Shippensburg in the PSAC Semifinals on Friday, Nov. 13, at 5 p.m. in Lock Haven, Pa. Cal U has now won 11 of its last 12 matches in the PSAC Tournament dating back to the 2005 season. Meanwhile, Gannon drops to 22-9 this year after entering the tournament as the fourth seed in the PSAC West.

Senior outside hitter Joanna Nist (Rockwood, Pa./Rockwood), who was selected the PSAC West Athlete of the Week earlier in the day, registered her 19th kill/dig double-double of the season with 17 kills and 15 digs. Middle hitters Ludmila Amaral (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Afonso Schimidt) and Bridget Bielich (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) each added 10 kills in the victory over the Golden Knights.

Junior libero Julie Paronish (Hastings, Pa./Northern Cambria) paced the defensive effort with 16 digs, while Nist and sophomore defensive specialist Sara McMullen (State College, Pa./State College) tallied 15 and 11 digs, respectively. All-American setter Renata da Silva (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Ateneu) engineered the offensive attack with 46 assists and added four blocks in the win. Amaral also recorded a match-high five blocks (all assisted).

In the other PSAC quarterfinal matches on Tuesday, Shippensburg defeated Kutztown on the road, Clarion defeated Edinboro and Lock Haven clinched home-court advantage throughout the tournament with a sweep of West Chester.

The PSAC Semifinal match against Shippensburg marks the second meeting between the two teams this season with the Vulcans earning a 3-0 win over the Red Raiders at Hamer Hall earlier this year.
