Box Score

CLARION, Pa. (Oct. 31) – The No. 25 Vulcans captured their first-ever Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West title with a 4-0 victory at Clarion on Saturday afternoon in divisional action.

The California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team finished the regular season with a 15-4-1 overall record and 10-3-1 league mark. Meanwhile, the Golden Eagles concluded the year with a 4-14-2 mark and 0-13-1 in PSAC West play. The Vulcans opened the day tied with Mercyhurst for first place, but earned an outright divisional crown after the Lakers lost at IUP. As the top seed from the West in next week's PSAC Tournament, Cal U will host fourth-seeded Gannon in the quarterfinals on Tuesday, Nov. 3, at Roadman Park.

The Vulcans took an early 1-0 lead against Clarion in the 11th minute when junior forward Sam Regney (Monaca, Pa./Monaca) scored her seventh goal of the year off an assist from senior Amanda Heister (Palmyra, Pa./Northern Lebanon). With the assist, Heister ties Cal U Athletic Hall of Famer Sherry Valera for first place all-time with 103 career points. Cal U then increased its lead to 2-0 at the 40:08-mark when sophomore Jodi McDonald (Ajax, Ontario/Ajax) tallied a goal off a feed from freshman Kayla Fransko (Monongahela, Pa./Ringgold). Ninety seconds later, sophomore Raghen Morrow (Moon Twp., Pa./Moon) scored her first goal of the season off another pass from Fransko.

Morrow and Fransko teamed up for another score in the second half when Morrow posted the fourth goal of her career in the 71st minute.

Goalkeepers Paula Jackson (Kingston, Jamaica/Wolmer's Trust) and Jennifer Ream (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra) combined for the shutout with Jackson earning her 14th win of the year.

After missing the PSAC Tournament by only one point in 2008, the Vulcans qualified for the league tournament for the first time in program history this year. Over the last two seasons, Cal U has amassed an impressive 27-9-4 overall record (.725) after winning just 21 games from 2004-07.
