CALIFORNIA (Oct. 30) – Senior All-American setter
Renata da Silva (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Ateneu) reached a personal milestone on Friday night to help lead the Vulcans to a 3-0 (25-9, 25-13, 25-15) win against Slippery Rock in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action.
With the win, the Vulcans improve to 26-5 overall and 16-0 in league play with a two-game lead in the PSAC West standings over Clarion (24-6, 14-2). Meanwhile, The Rock drops to 7-22 this season with a 3-13 record in divisional action.
da Silva became the first player in school history to reach 5,000 career assists in the match against Slippery Rock. Already having set the career school record for assists as a junior, she has amassed 5,031 assists in 137 career matches.
Cal U featured a balanced offensive attack against Slippery Rock, as 11 different players registered at least one kill. Senior outside hitter
Joanna Nist (Rockwood, Pa./Rockwood) led the team with eight kills and nine digs, while classmate
Ashley Moore (Yorktown, Va./Grafton) finished with five kills and eight digs. Senior middle hitter
Ludmila Amaral (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Afonso Schimidt) collected eight digs, four kills and four blocks in the sweep.
da Silva directed the offense for the Vulcans with 33 assists, while junior
Julie Paronish (Hastings, Pa./Northern Cambria) and freshman
Ana Luisa Aguilar Almeida (Belo Horizont, Brazil/Colegio Promove) added six digs defensively.
Cal U returns to action tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 31, when they host Clarion in Hamer Hall at 1 p.m.
