Russo, Doria post hat tricks in 9-0 win

Box Score

CALIFORNIA (Oct. 3) – Freshmen Kelsey Russo (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) and Nikki Doria (South Park, Pa./South Park) each registered their first career hat tricks on Saturday, as the No. 17 California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team tied the single-game school record for goals in a dominate 9-0 victory over Ohio Valley (W.Va.) in non-conference play.

With the win, the Vulcans improve 8-3 overall and snapped a two-game losing streak. The Fighting Scots fall to 1-11 overall. Cal U tied the school record of nine for goals in a game, previously set twice during the 1994 season.

Russo finished with a game-high four goals, while Doria collected eight points on three goals and two assists. The eight points by both Russo and Doria is the highest single-game total in recent program history (since 2003). Russo and Doria became the first set of teammates to record a hat trick in a game since 2003 when Keeli Rees and Brianne Plute accomplished the feat against Maine-Machias.

Cal U took a quick 1-0 lead in the first 90 seconds of the game when sophomore Jodi McDonald (Ajax, Ontario/Ajax) scored her first goal of the season off a pass from Doria. In the eighth minute, Russo collected a goal off another feed from Doria. The Vulcans expanded their lead at the 20:11-mark when Doria scored her first career goal before Russo tallied her second goal of the game off a pass from sophomore Elizabeth Johnston (Munhall, Pa./Steel Valley) less than three minutes later. Doria and sophomore Erin Fitzpatrick (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) added goals later in the first period.

After a six-goal first period, the Vulcans added three more goals in the final 45 minutes of the game. Doria completed her hat trick in the 48th minute off an assist from sophomore Kayla Jachimowski (Camden, Del./Caeser Rodney). Russo tallied her third goal (unassisted) at the 55:17-mark before scoring her fourth goal of the game – the most in recent program history – off a pass from sophomore Courtney Klein (Carnegie, Pa./Carlynton).

Junior transfer Kendra Edwards (Lusby, Md./Patuxent) recorded a shutout in net during her first start as a Vulcan, while the Fighting Scots' Abbi Menear finished with 12 saves.

Cal U attempted an astonishing 45 shots in the game and didn't allow Ohio Valley to take a shot attempt in 90 minutes.

The Vulcans return to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action on Tuesday, Oct. 6, when they host Slippery Rock for a 3 p.m. start at Roadman Park. Earlier this year, Cal U claimed a 2-1 road overtime victory over The Rock.
