HUMMELSTOWN, Pa. (Oct. 25) – Behind top-five finishes by sophomore
Paul Babashanian (Chesapeake, Va./Great Bridge) and senior
Bryan Bustamante (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Salem), the Vulcans finished in a tie for second place on Sunday at the 2009 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships, which were played at the par-72, 7,0009-yard Hershey Links.
The California University of Pennsylvania men's golf team shot a two-round 39-over 615 (302-313) and tied Millersville (313-302) for second place at the seven-team event. IUP won the conference title for the third-straight season after carding a 16-over 592 (298-294) behind the top two overall finishers. Sophomore Brad Boyle beat teammate Gavin Smith in a playoff to earn medalist honors, while Smith was voted the Tournament MVP by the league coaches.
Babashanian shot a six-over 150 (74-76) in the two rounds to finish third overall and six strokes back of the medalist. Bustamante finished in a three-way tie for fourth place after carding a seven-over 151 (73-78). Both players earned all-conference accolades after finishing in the top 10 at the event. At last year's championship, Babashanian and Bustamante tied for second on the team and 12th place overall.
Freshman
Justin Newbauer (Georgetown, Pa.) and sophomore
Austin Stoddard (Pittsfield, Pa./Youngsville) both carded a 14-over 158 to tie for 21st place in a field of 35 golfers. Newbauer opened the tournament with a five-over 77 before shooting a nine-over 81 in the final round. Meanwhile, Stoddard shot a six-over 78 on Saturday and finished with an eight-over 80 on Sunday.
Newcomer
James Currie (Worcester, England) also competed at the event for the Vulcans, finishing tied for 27th overall with a 20-over 164 (85-79).
The PSAC Championships were originally scheduled to be played last weekend at the Hershey Links, but weather and course conditions forced the two-day event to be postponed a week.
Cal U resumes the 2009-10 campaign when it opens its spring season in Southport, N.C., at the St. James Plantation Invitational on March 14-15.
