ERIE, Pa. (Oct. 20) – The No. 21 Vulcans were unable to overcome a two-goal deficit in the first half and suffered a 2-1 loss at Gannon on Tuesday in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action.
The loss drops the California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team to second place in the PSAC West standings with 22 points behind a 7-3-1 record in divisional play. Overall, the Vulcans fall to 12-4-1 this year. Meanwhile, the Golden Knights improve to 8-5-1 overall and 6-4-1 in league action with 19 points.
Gannon took an early 1-0 lead when junior Breanne Radin scored the game's first goal off a deflection after a pass from sophomore Amanda Sharbaugh. The Golden Knights added to their lead in the 23rd minute when Radin tallied her second goal of the contest and third of the season off a feed from freshman Sarah Deck, 2-0.
Late in the second half, Cal U avoided the shutout and trimmed the lead to 2-1 off an unassisted goal by freshman
Carley Work (Hopewell, Pa./Hopewell) – her sixth goal of the year – in the 88th minute.
In the loss, sophomore
Paula Jackson (Kingston, Jamaica/Wolmer's Trust) recorded seven saves while Golden Knights' senior Sabrina Chirco also made seven saves in 90 minutes.
Cal U out-shot Gannon by a 24-16 margin in the game, including by a 15-8 advantage in the second half, and the Golden Knights held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
The Vulcans return to action on Saturday, Oct. 24, when they travel to face Lock Haven at 1 p.m. Earlier this year, Cal U posted a 3-0 victory over Lock Haven at Roadman Park.
