CALIFORNIA (Jan. 28) – In a match-up of two Top 10 programs, junior guard
Brooque Williams (Pittsburgh, Pa./Perry) scored 30 points to help lift the No. 3 Vulcans past rival No. 9 Indiana University of Pennsylvania, 66-43, on Wednesday at Hamer Hall in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play.
The California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team, who are ranked No. 1 in the Atlantic Region, improves to 16-2 overall and 5-0 in league action. IUP, which is ranked No. 2 in the Atlantic Region, falls to 15-4 overall and 4-1 in divisional play.
Williams posted her 10th-straight double-double (14th of the season) with a game-high 30 points and 12 rebounds (three offensive). She made 13-of-19 attempts from the floor, while playing all 40 minutes. A three-time recipient of PSAC West Player of the Week, Williams leads the 16-team conference with 21.9 points and 11.6 rebounds per game.
Sophomore forward
Kayla Smith (Elkins, W.Va./Elkins) added 11 points, eight rebounds (five offensive), four steals and two blocks in the win. Senior guard
Shaquetta Mance (Flint, Mich./Hamady) finished with 10 points off the bench, while point guard
Crystal Andrews (Johnstown, Pa./Johnstown/Pitt-Johnstown) collected seven assists and five steals.
The Vulcans jumped to a 16-4 lead in the opening seven-plus minutes and never relinquished the lead to the Crimson Hawks, who were the pre-season favorite to win the division. In the first half, Cal U expanded its lead to as many as 16 points, 29-13, with 4:17 remaining before the break on a jumper by Williams. IUP eventually trimmed the deficit to 10 points to trail 31-21 at halftime.
Williams scored 14 of the Vulcans' 31 points in the opening half and Cal U out-rebounded IUP by a 21-12 margin.
Cal U opened the second half on a 15-3 rally to increase its lead to 46-24 on a fastbreak lay-up by Andrews with 14:51 left in the game. The Vulcans would then hold a 20-plus point lead throughout the remainder of the contest, which was a rematch of last season's PSAC Tournament Championship. Cal U lead by as many as 25 points, 66-41, when Williams scored a lay-up with 38 seconds left.
For the game, the Vulcans made 50.0 percent (27-of-54) of their shots and limited the Crimson Hawks to only a 32.1 shooting percentage (18-of-56) – their third-lowest total of the season.
Cal U held a dominant 42-27 advantage on the glass, as four players collected seven-plus rebounds. The Vulcan pressure also forced 19 turnovers that were converted into 27 points.
The Vulcans begin the first of a three-game road trip on Saturday, Jan. 31, when they travel to face PSAC-newcomer Mercyhurst College in Erie, Pa. The game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
