CALIFORNIA (Jan. 24) – Junior guard
Brooque Williams (Pittsburgh, Pa./Perry) scored 32 points and grabbed 16 rebounds (eight offensive) to help lead the No. 4 California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team to a 75-46 victory against Edinboro University on Saturday at Hamer Hall in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action.
With their ninth-straight victory, the Vulcans improve to 15-2 overall and 4-0 in league play to maintain a share of the lead in the Western Division standings. Meanwhile, the Fighting Scots fall to 11-6 overall and 2-2 in divisional action.
Williams registered her seventh career 30-point game after making 13-of-27 attempts from the floor and six-of-nine from the free throw line. With her 32 points, she passed
Becky Siembak (2003-04) and
Tammy McIntire-Mandich (1986-90) on the career scoring list and now ranks 10th in school history with 1,147 career points.
A pre-season PSAC West selection, Williams dominated in the second half. The athletic 5-8 guard scored 24 points on 10-of-16 shooting with eight rebounds (four offensive). She has now collected a double-double in nine-consecutive games and in 13 games overall this season.
Sophomore forward
Kayla Smith (Elkins, W.Va./Elkins) finished with 22 points on 9-of-16 attempts. The West Virginia native also added nine rebounds (five offensive), three assists and two steals against Edinboro.
Senior guard
Lindsay Johnson (New Springfield, Ohio/Springfield) posted nine points and seven rebounds, while point guard
Crystal Andrews (Johnstown, Pa./Johnstown/Pitt-Johnstown) collected 10 assists, five points and five steals.
The high-scoring Cal U offense struggled in the opening half, shooting just 33.3 percent (10-of-30). Despite the slow start, the Vulcans maintained a 27-20 lead against the Fighting Scots.
After the break, the Vulcans responded with a 13-0 run to open the second half and increase their lead to 20 points, 40-20, with 16:57 remaining. During the run, Cal U forced six turnovers and allowed Edinboro to attempt only one shot. Midway through the second half, the Vulcans mounted a 9-0 rally to increase their advantage to 28 points, 57-29, following a lay-up by Smith with 9:50 left. From there, Cal U maintained a 20-plus lead throughout the remainder of the game.
The Vulcans finished the game shooting 46.3 percent (31-of-67) from the floor behind a strong 56.8 shooting percentage (21-of-37) in the second half. The Fighting Scots managed only to make 34.5 percent of their shots and were held without a three-pointer for the first time all season.
Behind a combined 32 rebounds by Williams, Smith and Johnson, Cal U held a sizeable 47-33 advantage on the glass. The Vulcans also forced the Fighting Scots into a season-high 33 turnovers, which Cal U converted into 31 points.
The Vulcans return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 28, in a highly anticipated match-up against No. 9 Indiana University of Pennsylvania, who defeated Cal U for the PSAC Championship last season. The game is slated for a 6 p.m. start at Hamer Hall.
