CALIFORNIA (Jan. 14) – In a match-up of two Top 25 programs, the No. 6 Vulcans registered a 68-56 victory over No. 24 Gannon University on Wednesday at Hamer Hall in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division opener for both teams.
The California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team moves to 12-2 overall and 1-0 in league play. The Vulcans have won 10 of their last 11 games and improve to 7-0 this season at Hamer Hall. The Golden Knights, who are in their first season in the PSAC, drop to a similar 12-2 mark and 0-1 in divisional action.
Junior guard
Brooque Williams, the two-time reigning PSAC West Player of the Week, registered her sixth-straight double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds. The athletic guard made 10-of-20 attempts from the floor and lead the Vulcans with a team-high five assists.
Sophomore forward
Kayla Smith (Elkins, W.Va./Elkins) also posted a double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds. She made 9-of-15 attempts from the field and added four assists, three blocks and two steals. Through 14 games this season, Smith is averaging 16.6 points and 8.3 rebounds per game.
Senior guard
Crystal Andrews (Johnstown, Pa./Johnstown/Pitt-Johnstown) finished with 12 points, four rebounds, five steals and three assists. She drilled three of the six Cal U three-pointers.
With the score tied at 12-12, the Vulcans mounted a 12-3 rally to take a 24-15 lead with 8:50 remaining. During the run, Cal U made five-straight shots with back-to-back treys by Andrews. The Vulcans expanded their lead to 12 points, 36-24, with 1:58 remaining before halftime on a transition lay-up by Williams. In the opening half, Smith and Andrews scored 25 of the Vulcans' 36 points.
After Cal U expanded its lead to 14 points in the opening seconds of the second half, Gannon eventually cut the deficit to only five points, 52-47, with 11:22 remaining. The Vulcans countered with baskets by Smith and Williams to regain a comfortable nine-point lead, 56-47. Cal U expanded its lead to as much as 12 points, 68-56, on a pair of free-throws by sophomore guard
Amber Dubyak (Hastings, Pa./Cambria Heights) with 1:09 left.
Dubyak finished the game with eight points, three rebounds, three assists and three steals.
For the game, the Vulcans shot 42.2 percent (27-of-64) from the floor. In comparison, the Golden Knights managed to shoot just 33.9 percent (20-of-59).
Gannon held a 42-38 advantage on the glass, but Cal U posted a 38-26 edge on points in the paint. The Vulcans also scored 16 fast-break points and forced 24 turnovers by the Golden Knights.
Cal U continues divisional play on Saturday, Jan. 17, when it faces Lock Haven University. Tip-off at Lock Haven, Pa., is set for 1 p.m.
