Kayla Smith (Elkins, W.Va./Elkins) each posted double-doubles on Sunday, as the No. 8 California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team posted a 75-49 win over Shippensburg University at Hamer Hall in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover play.
The Vulcans move to 11-2 after winning nine of their last 10 games, while the Red Raiders drop their sixth-straight game to fall to 6-7. Shippensburg, who recently fell out of the
USA Today/ESPN Coaches' Top 25 Poll, was the pre-season favorite to win the PSAC Eastern Division.
Williams collected her fifth-straight and 10th double-double of the season after finishing with a game-high 24 points and 11 rebounds (four offensive). The junior guard made 8-of-19 attempts from the floor and 8-of-12 from the free-throw line. She also collected three assists and three steals in the game.
Smith posted her fourth 20-point game of the season, scoring 21 points on 8-of-15 attempts. She registered 13 rebounds (six offensive) for her third double-double of the year and collected a career-high seven steals.
Senior guard
Lindsay Johnson (New Springfield, Ohio/Springfield) finished with nine points, five rebounds and three assists, while sophomore guard
Amber Dubyak (Hastings, Pa./Cambria Heights) added eight points and five rebounds.
After a sluggish start to the game that saw the Vulcans trail 8-6, Cal U mounted a decisive 19-4 run to claim a 25-12 lead after a pair of free-throws by Williams. The Red Raiders trimmed the deficit to 27-16 before the Vulcans scored eight-straight points to increase their lead to 35-16 on a jumper by Smith with 4:29 left before halftime. Behind 11 first-half points by both Williams and Smith, Cal U took a 39-18 lead into halftime.
Cal U opened the second half by making six of its first eight shots to increase its lead to 33 points, 53-20, with 15:59 remaining. After a Red Raider three-pointer, the Vulcans scored seven-straight points to seize a 60-23 lead with almost 13 minutes left. The closest Shippensburg would get the rest of the game was 24 points, 71-47, with 2:59 remaining against the Cal U reserves.
Sophomore forward Kasey Gardner led the Red Raiders with 18 points and eight rebounds, while junior forward Lauren Beckley added 12 points.
For the game, the Vulcans shot 42.9 percent (27-of-63) from the floor and scored 36 points inside the paint. The Cal U defense limited its opponent to under 41 percent shooting for the fifth-straight game, as Shippensburg managed to shoot only 30.6 percent (15-of-49) from the field.
Behind a combined 24 rebounds by Williams and Smith, Cal U held a sizeable 45-31 advantage on the glass with 18 offensive rebounds. The Vulcans also collected 17 steals off 29 turnovers by the Red Raiders that led to 20 fast-break points by Cal U.
The Vulcans open PSAC West play on Wednesday when they host conference-newcomer Gannon University. Tip-off against the Golden Knights is set for 6 p.m. at Hamer Hall.
