Cal U sweeps PSAC-newcomer Mercyhurst

ERIE, Pa. (Sept. 9) – The No. 19 Vulcans extended their win streak to 10 matches on Tuesday night, sweeping Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC)-newcomer Mercyhurst College, 3-0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-21).

Under first-year head coach Stephanie Burner, the California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team has posted a 10-0 overall record, a 2-0 mark in divisional play and a 2-0 record against teams in the Top 25.

Junior middle hitter Ludmila Amaral (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Afonso Schimidt) and junior outside hitter Joanna Nist (Rockwood, Pa./Rockwood) led the Vulcans with 11 and eight kills, respectively, against the Lakers.

Junior setter Renata Silva (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Ateneu) dished out 30 assists and collected five digs, four kills and 1.5 blocks, while classmate Marta Hodge (Fayetteville, Pa./Chambersburg) notched a team-high 12 digs. Junior Ashley Moore (Yorktown, Va./Grafton) and Nist each collected eight digs.

Cal U returns to action this weekend in the PSAC/WVIAC Crossover hosted by Indiana University of Pennsylvania. The Vulcans open play at the multi-team event on Friday, Sept. 12, against West Virginia State University at 3 p.m.
