Cal U falls to No. 23 IUP, 4-1

CALIFORNIA (Sept. 17) – For the second time this season, the Vulcans played even with a nationally-ranked team, however, the California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team suffered a 4-1 loss to No. 23 Indiana University of Pennsylvania at Roadman Park on Wednesday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play.

With the loss, the Vulcans fall to 3-3-1 overall with a 1-3-1 mark in divisional play. Meanwhile, the Crimson Hawks move to 4-1 overall (all in division play).

Freshman Heather Robbins gave IUP a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute with a goal off a rebound with assists to sophomore Kyra Hricik and junior Sarah Romasco.

The scored remained 1-0 through the remainder of the first period with each team attempting four shots in the opening 45 minutes.

Cal U came out aggressive in the second period, attempting three shots in the opening four minutes. The Vulcans appeared to even the score in the 53rd minute with a goal from freshman Kayla Jachimowski (Camden, Del./Caeser Rodney), however, the officials ruled the ball did not go past the goal line.

Junior Amanda Heister (Palmyra, Pa./Northern Lebanon) evened the score for the Vulcans at the 69:06-mark with her third goal of the season after chipping IUP goalkeeper Kelly Brennan off an assist from freshman Chaning Wimer (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Township). However, the Crimson Hawks responded with a goal by Romasco in the next minute.

IUP eventually added two more tallies in the final five minutes of the game with goals by Melina Lieb and Ashley Moyer.

Senior goalkeeper Erin Cook (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Hills) posted seven saves on 13 attempts in 90 minutes of action.

The Vulcans out-shot the nationally-ranked Crimson Hawks by a 14-13 margin, while also holding a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Cal U continues its five-game homestand on Saturday, Sept. 20, when it hosts East Stroudsburg University at Roadman Park for a 2 p.m. contest.
