VILLANOVA, Pa. (Sept. 13) – The Vulcans dropped the doubles point but did not surrender a singles set en route to a commanding 6-1 victory over Division-I member Villanova University on Saturday.
The Wildcats, who are members of the Big East, jumped out to a 1-0 lead behind victories in two of the three doubles positions, but California University of Pennsylvania seized immediate control of the match in singles play.
In doubles action, sophomore
Laurie Navarro (Eysus, France/Lycee Jules Supervielle) and freshman
Axelle Fernandez (Nice, France/Institut Familial) claimed the lone Vulcan victory in doubles play, posting an 8-2 victory over Daniella Phillis and Courtney Reed at the No. 2 position.
Junior
Helena VanEysendeyk (Meythet, France/Zurich International) posted an impressive 6-3, 6-1 win at the first slot against VU's Reed. Cal U freshman
Alina Stanila (Alexandria, Romania/Techincal) claimed a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles over Solberg, while sophomore
Nina Kowalski (Hofheim, Germany/Man Taunus) topped Jaclyn Williamson by a 6-4, 7-5 count.
Sophomore
Galina Vishnikina (Almaty, Kazakhstan/Sport Military) outlasted the Wildcats' Daniella Phillis at the fourth slot, 6-4, 7-6. Marciel-Fernandez and
Mariana Oliveira (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Martha Falcao) rounded out the Vulcans' sweep in singles play with victories at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively.
Cal U returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 20 with dual matches against Bloomsburg University and East Stroudsburg University at Shippensburg, Pa. The Vulcans open play against the Huskies at 10 a.m. before facing the Warriors at 2 p.m.
