Cal ties Shippensburg in double OT, 1-1

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. (Aug. 30) – The Vulcans rallied to tie the game in the 12th minute against Shippensburg University on Saturday night before the two teams battled to a 1-1 double-overtime tie.

The California University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team held the heavy edge in terms of scoring opportunities, out-shooting the Raiders by a 36-6 margin. In the two overtime periods, the Vulcans attempted eight shots and prevented the host Raiders from getting in close to take a shot.

Shippensburg scored the first goal of the game at the 6:53-mark on a goal by Dave Rostad with an assist to Brad Anderson. Cal U responded with a goal by junior Mike Luecke (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) headed in a cross off a free kick by Felipe Souza (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Coleaio Objectivo). The goal marked the second of the season for Luecke, who scored 21 goals in his first two years with the program.

Sophomore goalkeeper Derek Yobbi (South Park, Pa./South Park) registered one save on only six shot attempts by the Raiders, while Brad Patke posted 12 saves for Shippensburg on 36 shots.

The match-up was a physical contest, as the two teams combined for seven yellow cards and 41 fouls.

The Vulcans open divisional play on Tuesday, Sept. 2, when they host Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC)-newcomer Mercyhurst College with a 3 p.m. start at Roadman Park in California, Pa.
