Cal U earns 72-53 win over Wheeling Jesuit

CALIFORNIA (Dec. 6) – Behind four players in double-figure scoring, including a game-high 18 points by senior Julian Logan (Kalamazoo, Mich./Loy Norrix), the Vulcans posted a 72-53 victory over Wheeling Jesuit University on Saturday at Hamer Hall.

After losing the first two games of the season, the California University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team moves to 2-2. Meanwhile, Wheeling Jesuit lost its third-straight game to fall to 1-4.

Logan tied his season high with 18 points on 6-of-13 shooting from the floor and 6-of-13 attempts from the free-throw line. Newcomers Travon Vann (Frederick, Md./St. John's Catholic Prep) and Chris Moore (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) each scored 12 points. Moore, a 6-8 forward, was a defensive presence in the paint against the Cardinals, registering six rebounds and a season-high five blocks.

Freshman Kelsey Williams (Sandusky, Ohio/Sandusky) posted 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds.

The Vulcans seized control of the game early in the first half with a 15-6 rally after forcing seven turnovers to claim a 20-11 lead. The Cardinals cut the deficit to four points, 23-19, before Cal U scored the final eight points of the half to take a 31-19 lead into the break.

Logan was pivotal in the Vulcans taking control of the game in the opening half, scoring 13 points on four-of seven attempts. Vann also helped key the offense with seven points. Defensively, Cal U forced 17 first-half turnovers, including two 10-second violations.

Cal U continued to maintain its double-digit lead for the first eight minutes of the second half, stretching its lead to as many as 17 points, 40-23, after a free-throw by Logan. The Cardinals continually worked at the lead, cutting the deficit to seven points, 46-39, with 9:19 remaining. With the score 61-53 with 2:52 left, the Vulcans scored 11-straight points to close with a 72-53 victory.

For the game, Cal U shot 46.4 percent (26-of-56) from the field and made 19 free-throw attempts. In comparison, Wheeling Jesuit shot 36.7 percent (22-of-6) from the floor. Despite being out-rebounded 43-38, the Vulcans scored 44 points in the paint and 14 second-chance points.

Defensively, Cal U forced a season-high 25 turnovers which converted into 25 points.

Sophomore Adam McFerran was the lone Cardinal in double-figures with 10 points, while freshman Obi Ukwoma collected a game-high 13 rebounds (four offensive).

The Vulcans are idle next week due to final examinations before returning to action on next Sunday, Dec. 14, with a 3 p.m. road contest against Holy Family University (Pa.).
