Vulcans win third-straight at Holy Family

PHILADELPHIA (Dec. 14) – The California University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team used a 20-0 edge in fast-break points and made a season-high eight three-pointers to claim a 73-52 victory over Holy Family University on Sunday at the Campus Center.

After losing their first two games of the season, the Vulcans have won three-straight contests to move to 3-2 overall. Meanwhile, the Tigers have lost four-straight games and fall to 1-8.

Senior forward Julian Logan (Kalamazoo, Mich./Loy Norrix) and sophomore guard Joe Berenato (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) led the way for Cal U with 20 and 16 points, respectively. Logan led all players with 20 points on 9-of-11 shooting, including a perfect five-for-five in the second half, and collected a team-high seven rebounds and four steals. Berenato continued his strong play this season, drilling four-of-seven attempts from beyond the arc.

Junior guard Jerial Nixon (Lorain, Ohio/Lorain Admiral King) added nine points off the bench, while freshman guard Travon Vann (Frederick, Md./St. John's Catholic Prep) finished with seven points. Senior guard Jesse Brooks (Severn, Md./Archbishop Spalding) collected six points and six assists in the win.

The scored remained close in the opening 10 minutes of the game with the Vulcans holding a 21-15 lead with 9:26 left in the half. Cal U then mounted an impressive 15-2 run over the next four minutes to take a commanding 36-17 lead with 5:39 remaining before halftime. During the rally, the Vulcans made five-of-six shots, including three treys, and forced the Tigers into four turnovers. Holy Family eventually trimmed the deficit to 16 points, 40-24, in the final minutes of the half.

After the Tigers cut the Vulcans' lead to 42-31, Cal U sealed the game with a 12-1 rally to increase its lead to 59-35 with 11:09 left in the game. The Vulcans made seven-of-nine shots and forced five turnovers over the four-plus minute stretch. Over the final minutes of the game, Holy Family cut the deficit to 19 points, 71-52, after Cal U was playing all reserves.

Freshman forward Justin Swidowski led three Holy Family players in double-figure scoring with 15 points. Swidowski collected a double-double with a game-high 12 rebounds (seven offensive).

For the game, the Vulcans shot 50.0 percent (29-of-58) from the floor and made 36.4 percent (8-of-22) from beyond the arc. In comparison, the Tigers made 41.2 percent (21-of-51) of their shots, but struggled from the free-throw line after making just 33.3 percent (6-of-18 attempts).

Despite being out-rebounded 35-31, Cal U scored 38 points in the paint with 12 second-chance points. The Vulcans forced the Tigers into committing 21 turnovers, which Cal U converted into 26 points off turnovers and 20 fast-break points.

Cal U continues its road trip to Philadelphia on Tuesday, Dec. 16, when it faces Chestnut Hill University. The Vulcans face the Griffins at 7 p.m. in the Ann Rusnack Sorgenti Arena.
