Vulcans clinch No. 1 seed in PSAC Tournament

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. (Nov. 1) – The Vulcans clinched a berth and the No. 1 seed in next week's Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament on Saturday with a 3-0 shutout victory against Slippery Rock University in the final game of the regular season for both PSAC Western Division schools.

By garnering the No. 1 seed, the California University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team will now host second-seeded Slippery Rock on Wednesday, Nov. 5, at Roadman Park in the PSAC Semifinals. The Vulcans finish the regular season with 13 points behind a 4-3-1 mark in divisional play and 11-7-2 overall record. The Rock fall to 4-4 in league action and 13-5-1 overall.

Cal U, who swept the regular-season series against Slippery Rock, claimed a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute when junior forward Mike Luecke (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) scored a goal off a 60-plus yard kick by sophomore goalkeeper Derek Yobbi (South Park, Pa./South Park). The senior forward leads the team with a career-high 17 goals, which ranks fourth in single-season school history.

The Vulcans increased their lead to 2-0 at the 72:49-mark when senior Brian Braithwaite (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) registered his second goal of the year off assists from classmate Evan Picard (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) and Luecke. Cal U added an insurance goal in the 83rd minute when senior Shakir McCoy (Huber Heights, Ohio/Tecumseh/Wayne) collected his seventh goal of the year on an assist from Luecke.

Yobbi earned his second shutout of the season, making six saves on 14 attempts.

Despite each team taking seven shots in the first half, The Rock finished the game with a 14-11 advantage in shots and held a 3-1 edge in corner kicks.

Cal U hosts Slippery Rock in the PSAC Semifinals on Wednesday, Nov. 5, at Roadman Park. Time for the contest will be announced at a later date.
