Vulcans battle No. 25 Mercyhurst to 1-1 tie

Box Score

ERIE, PA. (Oct. 7) – Freshman Chaning Wimer (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Township) scored the game-tying goal in the 65th minute on Tuesday, as the Vulcans battled to a 1-1 double-overtime tie against No. 25 Mercyhurst College in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action.

The California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team moves to 7-3-3 overall and 3-3-2 in PSAC West play this year. Mercyhurst, who is tied for second in the divisional standings, is now 6-3-3 overall and 4-1-3 in league action.

The Lakers broke the scoreless tie at the 17:38-mark when sophomore Jamie Schroter scored on a direct kick from 35 yards away, placing the ball over the Vulcans' goalkeeper Erin Cook (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Hills).

Mercyhurst took a 1-0 lead into halftime before Wimer evened the contest at the 65:09-mark with a goal – her second of the season – on a penalty kick.

The contest remained tied at 1-1 after regulation despite the Lakers holding a 21-7 advantage in shots during the opening two periods. In overtime, both teams challenged for possession of the ball with the two teams combining for only three shots in two extra periods.

Cook registered seven saves on 23 shot attempts by Mercyhurst, who entered the game ranked third in Atlantic region in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas poll.

Wimer paced the Vulcans' offensive attack with three shot attempts, while five different players attempted a shot against the Lakers.

Cal U, who is tied for seventh in the Atlantic region, extends its unbeaten streak to six games after posting just four victories last season.

The Vulcans continue divisional play when they host PSAC-newcomer Gannon University for a 4 p.m. contest at Roadman Park on Saturday, Oct. 11.
