Sullivan leads Cal U to 2-1 double-OT victory

EDINBORO, Pa. (Oct. 28) – Freshman Brittany Sullivan (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) scored the first goal of her career in the 105th minute on Tuesday afternoon, as the California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team recorded a 2-1 double-overtime victory in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play.

With the win, the Vulcans remain in position to qualify for the PSAC Tournament with a 7-4-2 mark in divisional play and 26 points. Overall, Cal U stands at 12-4-3 overall which marks an eight-game improvement from last year's record. The Vulcans also hold a 3-0-3 in games decided in overtime (all double-overtime contests). Meanwhile, the Fighting Scots drop to 6-11-1 overall and 2-10-1 in league action.

After a scoreless first period, Edinboro took a 1-0 lead in the 59th minute with a goal from sophomore forward when Rachel Dahlstrand scored her 10th goal of the season. Cal U rallied to tie the score at the 62:13-mark on a breakaway goal by freshman Kayla Jachimowski (Camden, Del./Caeser Rodney) – her fourth goal of the year – off an assist from junior Amanda Heister (Palmyra, Pa./Northern Lebanon).

The score remained tied at 1-1 throughout regulation and the first overtime period. Sullivan broke the tie with the game-winning goal off a turnover at the 105:54-mark. Jachimowski collected the assist on the game-winning goal for her third point of the game and 12th point of the season.

Senior Erin Cook (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Hills) earned the victory in net, making five saves (all in the second period) on 16 shot attempts.

The Fighting Scots held a 16-12 advantage in shots, however, the Vulcans managed a combined 4-1 edge in the two overtime periods. Edinboro also held a 5-1 margin in corner kicks.

Cal U looks to secure its position in the PSAC Tournament on Saturday, Nov. 1, when the Vulcans conclude the regular season with a 3 p.m. contest at Slippery Rock University.
