Helena VanEysendeyk (Meythet, France/Zurich International) won her third-place match in singles play on Saturday at the NCAA Division II Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Small College Championships presented by the United States Tennis Association (USTA).
VanEysendeyk, who finished last year ranked No. 3 in the country by the ITA, earned the victory in the third-place match over Hewenfei Li of BYU-Hawaii in straight sets after winning the tiebreaker, 6-4, 7-6 (10). Li entered the tournament as the No. 1 seed after finishing last year as the No. 1 player in the country.
In singles play at the ITA Championships, VanEysendeyk recorded a 2-1 mark with her only loss coming to the No. 2 seed in the championship field. The junior French native now boasts a 13-1 record in singles play this year.

Axelle Fernandez (Nice, France/Institut Familial) also placed in doubles at the national tournament, finishing in sixth place with a 1-2 mark.
The California University of Pennsylvania fall tennis season is now finished. The Vulcans will resume their 2008-09 season in February with matches against Georgetown University and Youngstown State University before traveling to Florida for spring break when Cal U will play several nationally-ranked teams.
