LOCK HAVEN, Pa. (Sept. 8) – The California (PA) football program collected a pair of weekly accolades from the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) on Monday afternoon, as junior defensive back
Alexie Sangster, Jr. was named West Defensive Athlete of the Week and sophomore kicker
Harry Radcliffe was tabbed the West Special Teams Athlete of the Week.
Sangster and Radcliffe helped the Vulcans earn a 23-19 victory over then-No. 12 Charleston (WV) on Thursday in Week 1 of the season. Cal previously garnered multiple PSAC Athlete of the Week honorees in the same week twice last fall. Additionally, the Vulcans earned a season-opening win over a top-25 team for the first time since the 2012 campaign.
A 6-foot-1 junior, Sangster tied for the team lead with a career-high nine tackles (four solo) and sealed the victory with a last-minute interception on Thursday. UC was facing fourth-and-23 at the Cal 31-yard line with 45 seconds left before Sangster registered his second career interception at the 9-yard line to allow the Vulcans to regain possession. He helped anchor a defense that allowed just 100 passing yards on 6-of-21 attempts by the Golden Eagles, which previously finished with 285 passing yards and five passing touchdowns in Week 0.
Radcliffe converted three-of-four field goals, highlighted by multiple 40-yard attempts, in the win over Charleston – the two-time, defending-Mountain East Conference (MEC) Champions. He became the first kicker since Will Brazill in 2017 to convert at least two 40-yard field goals in a game. Radcliffe converted the first field goal of his career, a 35-yard attempt, with 8:53 left in the first quarter. The Laurel Highlands product then added a 40-yard field goal in both the second and third quarters in the win over the Golden Eagles.
Cal returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 13, when it hosts West Chester at Adamson Stadium with kickoff set for 12 p.m. The Golden Rams started the year with 30-13 win on Saturday at Bentley (MA) – the preseason favorite in the Northeast-10 Conference (NE-10).
