Gilliard garners weekly honor for second time

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. (Feb. 10) – For the second time this season, California (PA) senior guard Talia Gilliard was selected the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West Athlete of the Week on Monday afternoon.

Gilliard averaged 26.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, 2.0 blocks and 3.0 steals per game, as the Vulcans posted a pair of wins last week in PSAC West action. She shot 67.9 percent (19-of-28) from the field, including 11-of-17 attempts (64.7 percent) from beyond the arc, while playing 35.5 minutes per game. Gilliard scored 22 points on 7-of-10 shooting behind five-of-five from long range and added eight rebounds, three blocks and three steals in an 88-78 victory against No. 9 Seton Hill on Wednesday. The Mechanicsburg native set a career-high with 30 points on 12-of-18 attempts from the floor, including 6-of-12 from three-point territory, on Saturday in a 79-56 win at Slippery Rock. Gilliard, who posted 15 points in the fourth quarter, also tallied six rebounds, one block and three steals versus The Rock.

A 5-foot-9 senior, Gilliard ranks second on the team in scoring this year with 13.0 points per game while sitting among the league leaders with 41 three-pointers made. Additionally, she is third in the PSAC with 2.77 steals per game and averages a team-leading 33.1 minutes per game. Gilliard, who averaged 2.4 points per game over the previous three years, has recorded four 20-point games over the last four weeks.

Gilliard joins former teammate Ciaira Lloyd (2020-23) as the only Cal guards over the last seven years to earn PSAC West Athlete of the Week laurels multiple times in a season.

The Vulcans return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 12, when they travel to face Clarion in PSAC West play at 5:30 p.m.
