FL Recap: Vulcans face five MI, MN programs

ORLANDO, Fla. (March 8) – The California (PA) tennis team faced five teams from Michigan and Minnesota during its spring trip to Central Florida with the opponents being members of NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and the NAIA.

The trio of senior Carmen Duran, junior Maria Del Mar Ojeda and freshman Lilli Schreiber led the team with three wins in singles play while in The Sunshine State. Del Mar Ojeda and sophomore Leandra Guldimann paced the team with a 4-1 mark in doubles action, all at the first position.

MONDAY, MARCH 4
The Vulcans opened their spring season with a 5-2 loss to Cornerstone (Mich.), a NAIA program. Cal was swept in doubles play before earning wins at second and fourth singles. Guldimann collected a 6-2, 7-5 win at the second position and Schreiber posted a 6-1, 6-2 victory at the fourth slot in her college debut.

TUESDAY, MARCH 5
Cal dropped a 6-1 match to St. Cloud State (Minn.), which competes in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference at the NCAA Division II level. The Vulcan dropped the doubles point despite Guldimann and Del Mar Ojeda registering a 6-2 victory at the first position. Sophomore Diletta Maria Mungo tallied a 6-2, 6-3 win at first singles against the Huskies.

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 6
The Vulcans were idle.

THURSDAY, MARCH 7
Cal posted its lone match win of the trip by a 5-2 margin against Albion (Mich.), a NCAA Division III program, in the morning before falling by a 5-2 count to Minnesota Crookston of the NSIC at night.

Against the Britons, the Vulcans secured the doubles point by winning all three matches. Del Mar Ojeda and Guldimann posted an 8-1 victory at the first slot, while freshman Bega Gotor and Mungo claimed an 8-2 win at the second position. Duran and freshman Peyton Reese collected an 8-3 victory at third doubles. Cal then registered the match victory with four wins in singles play. Guldimann finished with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at the first slot, while Schreiber posted a 6-0, 6-0 win at the second position. Del Mar Ojeda tallied a 6-2, 6-0 victory at third singles and Duran recorded a 6-1, 6-2 win at the fifth slot.

Cal dropped the doubles point at night against Crookston despite Guldimann and Del Mar Ojeda collecting a 6-3 victory at the first position. Del Mar Ojeda rallied for a 1-6, 6-4, 10-5 win at fourth singles and Duran outlasted her opponent for a 3-6, 6-4, 10-6 victory at the sixth slot.

FRIDAY, MARCH 8
The Vulcans closed the trip with a 4-3 loss to Winona State (Minn.), another NSIC member.  Guldimann and Del Mar Ojeda posted a 7-6 win at first doubles with the Warriors earning the doubles point. Del Mar Ojda claimed a 6-7, 6-3, 7-5 victory at third singles and Schreiber collected a 0-6, 6-3, 7-5 win at the fourth slot. Duran recorded a 6-2, 6-0 victory at the sixth position on Friday. The match originally started on Sunday, March 3, before play was suspended after the doubles session due to weather.

NEXT
Cal is idle for over a week before hosting Allegheny (Pa.), a NCAA Division III program, on Saturday, March 16, at Roadman Park with the match starting at 10:30 a.m.
