LEBANON, Pa. (Oct. 18) – The California (PA) men's golf team shot a 23-over 311 on Friday afternoon in the opening round of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships at Iron Valley Golf Club.
The Vulcans sit sixth in the team standings after the initial 18 holes at the 54-hole championship event. Gannon raced out to an 11-stroke lead on Friday by firing a 10-under 278 after four players carded rounds under par. Millersville sits second at one-over 289 following the opening round and Pitt-Johnstown ranks third with a 16-over 304.
Sophomore
Gavin Goodrich leads the team with a four-over 76 and is tied for 13th overall on the individual leader board. He tallied 13 pars in the opening round and a birdie on the par-five, 562-yard 13th on Friday. Goodrich entered the weekend as the team's leader with a scoring average of 74.5 strokes this season.
Classmate
Chaz Ekoniak is tied for 19th place after shooting a five-over 77 in the opening round. He carded a pair of birdies on par fives on the front nine on Friday. Senior
Jack Hritsko sits one stroke back at six-over 78 and is tied for 24th overall after closing the round with two birdies over the last six holes.
Sophomore
Anthony DePietress carded an eight-over 80 and is tied for 28th place at the league championships. He led the team with three birdies over the opening 18 holes, all on par fives. Fellow sophomore
Ben Edwards sits in a tie for 30th overall with a nine-over 81 after birdying the par-four, 427-yard 18th.
Gannon senior Michael Wareham is the opening-round leader after firing a four-under 68. He tallied five birdies in the opening round while building a two-stroke lead.
Cal continues play at the PSAC Championships tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 19, with its second-round tee times starting at 10:50 a.m.
