CALIFORNIA (Feb. 28) – Four members of the California (PA) swimming team were named to the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District Team on Tuesday afternoon, as senior
Avrey Barnes (Oakdale, Pa./South Fayette), sophomore
Autumn Christner (McKeesport, Pa./East Allegheny), junior
Gabby Miller (York, Pa./Central York) and senior
Leah Trocchio (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) received the award.
With the honor, all four swimmers are eligible for consideration on the CSC Academic All-America Teams that will be announced in March. The CSC Academic All-America program replaces the former CoSIDA Academic All-America program after CoSIDA recently rebranded the organization as College Sports Communicators.
Barnes competed at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships in both 2021 and 2022. She scored in the 400 IM at the league meet as a sophomore. Barnes holds a 3.86 cumulative grade-point average (GPA) while completing a degree in psychology and a minor in foundations of secondary education.
Christner competed at the league championships in four events this year after previously just competing in a pair of time trials in 2022. She established a personal best in the 200 breaststroke at the conference meet, plus set personal records in the 50 freestyle, 100 breaststroke and 200 IM while at Liberty this season. Christner maintains a 3.57 cumulative GPA while pursuing a degree in PreK-4 education.
Miller accounted for 64 points as an individual at the 2023 PSAC Championships with a trio of top-10 finishes. She reached the NCAA 'B' cut in the 50 freestyle at the league championships with a time of 23.86 seconds, which ranks as the fourth-best in school history. Miller also notched the fifth-fastest time in program history in the 100 freestyle at 52.16 seconds at the conference meet. Additionally, the York native helped anchor four relays that posted season-best times at the PSAC Championships. Miller registered the fastest time on the team in the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle, 100 butterfly and 200 IM this season. The 5-foot-11 junior holds a 3.66 cumulative GPA while pursuing a degree in exercise science.
Trocchio competed in freestyle and backstroke events this season after competing in four events at the PSAC Championships in 2021. She is completing degrees in both psychology and sociology as a double-major while boasting a 3.87 GPA.
To qualify for the academic all-district honors, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore academically and in athletic eligibility and must maintain a cumulative 3.50 GPA or higher. Additionally, each institution is capped at four nominees in the sport of women's swimming. This marks the first year in which the sport of swimming will be recognized separately by the organization, as previously it was included among the at-large program.
