LEWISBURG, Pa. (Feb. 25) – California (PA) senior
Divonne Franklin (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop John Carroll) made history on the opening day of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships on Saturday by registering the seventh-fastest time in NCAA Division II history in the 60-meter dash.
Franklin shattered her all-time league record, championship record and school record during the preliminaries of the event. She crossed the finish line with a staggering time of 7.28 seconds, which is the third-best time in NCAA Division II this year behind only a pair of teammates from Minnesota State. Franklin topped the preliminary field by an impressive 0.28 seconds and eclipsed her all-time and school mark in the event set last week by eight-hundredths of a second. The Philadelphia native also reset her championship record established at last year's event by an overwhelming 0.24 seconds, plus broke the facility record at Gerhard Fieldhouse that stood since 2014 by 0.18 seconds.
Additionally, Franklin broke her own championship record while winning the preliminaries of the 200-meter dash on Saturday. She posted a time of 24.31 seconds to top the preliminaries by a staggering 0.34 seconds. Franklin eclipsed her league championship mark in the 200 meters set last year by 0.22 seconds.
The Vulcans rank eighth in the team standings after the opening day with 11 points. Edinboro and Slippery Rock are tied for the lead through five events with 43 points, while Shippensburg sits in third place with 34 points.
Sophomore
Tatum Hoffman (Ligonier, Pa./Ligonier Valley) earned All-PSAC laurels for the first time in her career after finishing third overall in the pentathlon with 3,099 points. She won the long jump in the pentathlon with a personal-best distance of 5.23 meters (17-2.0 feet). Hoffman also placed second in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.49 seconds and finished third in the high jump with a mark of 1.57 meters (5-2.25 feet).
Senior
Darcie Frazier (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) also scored in the pentathlon on Saturday, as she placed fourth in the event with 3,022 points. She finished second in the long jump with a distance of 5.22 meters (17-1.5 feet) and placed third in the shot put with a heave of 10.60 meters (34-9.5 feet).
The California (PA) women's track & field team qualified multiple entries for the finals in the 60-meter hurdles while at the league championships. Senior
Kailee Bunyard (Columbia, Md./Atholton) placed second in the preliminaries on Saturday with a time of 9.01 seconds, which was 0.16 seconds faster than her seed time. Sophomore
Jazzy Harper (Media, Pa./Strath Haven) finished eighth in the preliminaries with a personal-best time of 9.28 seconds. Sophomore
Kyleigh Trecki (Clinton, Pa./West Allegheny) also established a personal record in the event on Saturday, placing 11th overall with a time of 9.51 seconds.
In the long jump, Frazier registered a personal best with a leap of 5.31 meters (17-5.25) on her second attempt to finish in 11th place.
The Vulcans conclude the PSAC Championships tomorrow, Sunday, Feb. 26, in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, with events starting at 12 p.m.
