Cal U features eight on All-PSAC West Teams

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. (May 13) – The California University of Pennsylvania baseball program led the league with eight honorees on the All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division Teams, highlighted by a trio of first-team selections, on Friday afternoon.

Senior pitcher Dylan Brosky (East Millsboro, Pa./Brownsville), senior third baseman Louden Conte (California, Pa./California) and senior utility Jacob McCaskey (Tarentum, Pa./Deer Lakes) were each voted to the All-PSAC West First-Team.

Brosky garnered All-PSAC West accolades for the second time in his career, as he was an All-PSAC West Second-Team selection last spring. He posted an 8-3 record this season while ranking sixth in the league with a career-best 2.39 ERA. Brosky totaled a team-leading 64.0 innings pitched over 12 appearances (11 starts) and held opponents to a .196 batting average, the second-best mark in the conference.

Conte received All-PSAC West First-Team laurels for a consecutive year, as he ranked second on the team with a career-high .356 average (42-for-118). He also finished second with 35 RBI and was third with six homers despite missing nearly 10 games due to injury. Conte led the team with a .456 on-base percentage, plus registered a career-high .602 slugging percentage, in his fourth year as a starter.

McCaskey became the first Cal U player since Mike Larson in 2004 to accomplish the rare feat of being an All-PSAC West selection at multiple positions in the same season, as he was also tabbed to the All-PSAC West Second-Team as a starting pitcher on Friday. McCaskey led the team in virtually every offensive category while starting at all four infield positions this season. He hit at a career-high .373 clip (63-for-169) and recorded a .675 slugging percentage behind 27 extra-base hits, including a team-leading 10 homers. The Deer Lakes product registered a 20-game hitting streak this year and finished with 11 stolen bases on 11 attempts. Last spring, McCaskey was an All-PSAC West First-Team honoree at shortstop.

Freshman outfielder Adam Crawford (North Fayette, Pa./West Allegheny), senior relief pitcher Patrick Gumto (Allison Park, Pa./Shaler), senior catcher Justin Stewart (Butler, Pa./Butler), senior shortstop Anthony Venezia (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler), plus McCaskey as a starting pitcher were chosen to the All-PSAC West Second-Team.

Crawford started 44 games and posted a .413 on-base percentage behind a team-leading 24 walks as a true freshman. He finished the year with a .304 average (45-for-148) and totaled 21 RBI and 29 runs scored while splitting time between Nos. 1 and 2 in the lineup.

Despite being limited to injury, Gumto received All-PSAC West Second-Team status for a consecutive season. He posted a 1-0 record with three saves in 11 relief appearances. Gumto registered 13 strikeouts and scattered just three hits over 11.1 innings pitched this spring.

McCaskey finished with a 6-1 record in his first full year as a weekend starting pitcher. He registered a 3.17 ERA and 59 strikeouts over 54.0 innings in 10 appearances with a pair of complete games.

In his third year as a starter, Stewart set career highs with four home runs and 21 RBI while posting a .479 slugging percentage. He also hit at a .289 clip (35-for-121) with 24 runs scored, 17 walks and eight stolen bases. Stewart threw out an impressive 12 baserunners this year, which was second-most in the conference.

Venezia earned All-PSAC West honors for a consecutive season, as he was an All-PSAC West First-Team honoree at utility in 2021. He led the team with 15 stolen bases and finished second with 38 runs scored while starting every game this spring. Venezia set career highs with a .288 average (49-for-170) and a .447 slugging percentage behind 16 extra-base hits, including five home runs. The Pittsburgh native finished second in the league with 121 assists while playing both middle infield positions this year.

The Vulcans have featured eight selections to the All-PSAC West Teams in back-to-back years, which are the most since the 2007 campaign. Cal U was the only school in the 17-team league to feature more than six All-PSAC honorees this spring.
