WASHINGTON, Pa. (April 3) – The Vulcans dropped both games of a doubleheader against Gannon on Friday afternoon at EQT Park in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play, falling 6-5 in Game 1 before suffering a 9-7 loss in extra innings in Game 2.
NOTES
• California (17-9, 7-3) was swept in the home doubleheader by Gannon for the first time since 2019.
• The Vulcans played their first extra-inning game of the season on Friday.
• Cal and Gannon had previously gone to extra innings only once since the Golden Knights joined the PSAC in the 2009 campaign.
• Junior designated hitter
Ikon Jones reached base seven times (five hits, walk, hit by pitch) and scored three runs.
GAME 1
• The Golden Knights scored five runs in the top of the fifth before the Vulcans plated runs in each of the final three innings.
• Jones posted three hits, one RBI and one run scored, while senior right fielder
Connor Evans finished with two hits and one run scored.
• Cal tied the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by Jones.
• The Golden Knights belted a pair of homers, including a three-run homer by first baseman Wes Parker, in the fifth, 6-1.
• Cal scored on an RBI double by redshirt freshman left fielder
Chad Helwich in the bottom of the inning and added two runs in the sixth.
• The Vulcans cut the deficit to 6-5 in the seventh when sophomore second baseman
Peyton Ford led off the inning with a homer.
• Cal later had runners on first and second with two outs before a fly-out ended the game.
• Junior
Beau Bigam (4-2) suffered the loss after allowing six runs (all earned) on nine hits in 5.0 innings (86 pitches).
• Freshman
Tanner Phillips tossed 2.0 scoreless innings of relief, retiring all six batters he faced.
GAME 2
• The Vulcans tied the score in the bottom of the seventh with a bases-loaded walk before the Golden Knights scored two runs in the ninth inning.
• Junior catcher
Kyle Rizzo collected two hits, three RBI and one walk, while Jones posted two hits, one RBI, two runs scored and one walk.
• Evans added two hits, one RBI and one run scored in the loss.
• Gannon scored three runs in the top of the first behind a two-run homer by designated hitter Ian Soto.
• The Vulcans later scored two runs in the second before adding three runs in the third to cut the deficit to a 6-5 margin.
• Gannon scored on an error in the fourth before sophomore shortstop
Brandon McClain-Banks delivered a solo homer with two outs in the sixth, 7-6.
• The Vulcans loaded the bases on two hit by pitches and an intentional walk.
• Following a strikeout and a pitching change, Rizzo drew a two-out walk on a full count to tie the game.
• Gannon recorded a go-ahead, two-run double in the top of the ninth after having runners on second and third with one out.
• Sophomore
Ben Barr (1-1) was saddled with the loss after yielding two runs (both earned) on three hits and two walks in 2.0 innings of relief.
• Classmate
Coleman Fletcher yielded one run (earned) on five hits in 5.0 innings (81 pitches) of relief.
