MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (April 23) – The Vulcans captured six victories (five individual) and recorded 10 league-qualifying marks over the weekend while competing at the Mountaineer Showcase hosted by West Virginia.
Senior
Jalen Cloud (Leechburg, Pa./Kiski) earned the win in the triple jump for the third time this spring. He reached the NCAA provisional standard in the event with a distance of 14.71 meters (48-3.25 feet) on his fourth attempt. Cloud has posted a NCAA qalifying mark in the triple jump four times during the outdoor season.
Fellow senior
Avery Boea-Gisler (Pittsburgh, Pa./Serra Catholic) claimed the victory in the 400-meter hurdles with a personal-best time of 54.09 seconds, which was three-hundredths of a second faster than the field. He trimmed eight-tenths of a second off his conference-qualifying mark in the event. Boea-Gisler also placed second in the triple jump with a personal record of 13.61 meters (44-8.00 feet) while competing in the event for only the third time in his collegiate career.
The Vulcans recorded three of top-five times in the finals of the 100-meter dash over the weekend. Junior
Kristopher Lytle (Columbia, Md./Atholton) placed second in the finals with a personal-best time of 10.84 seconds. Freshman
Aaron McPherson (Pittsburgh, Pa./Brentwood) set a personal record with a time of 10.91 seconds to place third overall in the finals, while junior
Tyrese Canada (Richmond, Va./Henrico) placed fourth in the 100 meters with a personal-best time of 11.01 seconds.
Cal U captured the victory in the 4x400-meter relay at WVU, as sophomore
Noah Bernarding (Cochranton, Pa./Cochranton), Lytle, Boea-Gisler and Cloud set a season-best time of 3 minutes, 23.44 seconds.
Individually, Bernarding won the 800-meter run by over one full second after rounding the track in 1:56.46. Junior
Mason Jobe (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Salem) qualified for the conference championships after posting the victory in the 1,500-meter run with a personal-best time of 4:04.61.
Senior
Matt Collins (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield) registered a pair of top-three finishes over the weekend. He won the discus throw with a league-qualifying distance of 44.06 meters (144-7.00 feet) on his fourth attempt. Collins also placed third in the shot put with a heave of 13.50 meters (44-3.5 feet). Sam Rothstein (Sykesville, Md./Century) set a personal record in the shot put at WVU with a distance of 13.53 meters (44-4.75 feet) to finish second overall in the event.
In the 110-meter hurdles, senior
John Franklin, Jr. (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) reached the conference standard with a time of 15.50 seconds to finish in fourth place. Junior
Ethan Moyer (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) placed second in the javelin throw while at WVU with a mark of 47.69 meters (156-6.00 feet).
Cal U returns to action at the Paul Kaiser Classic hosted by Shippensburg on Saturday, April 30, while select entries will compete at the prestigious Penn Relays from April 28-30.
