Vulcans place trio on All-PSAC West Teams

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. (March 4) – The Vulcans featured three honorees on the All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West Teams on Thursday afternoon, the most for the program since the 2007-08 campaign.

Sophomore Philip Alston (Columbus, Ohio/Westerville North) was selected to the All-PSAC West First-Team, while senior Brent Pegram (Upper Marlboro, Md./Dr. Henry A. Wise Jr.) and junior Zyan Collins (South Riding, Va./Freedom) were both tabbed to the All-PSAC West Second-Team. Pegram received All-PSAC West status for the third time in his career, while Collins earned All-PSAC West laurels for a consecutive season.

In a startling vote by the head coaches in the PSAC, IUP guard Armoni Foster was chosen PSAC West Athlete of the Year and Pitt-Johnstown forward John Paul Kromka was tabbed PSAC West Defensive Athlete of the Year. Foster registered statistics similar to his sophomore season with the Crimson Hawks with the exception of assists, while Kromka paced the league in blocks for the third-straight year and received the major post-season award for the third-consecutive campaign.

Alston is the first player to lead the PSAC in both scoring and rebounding since the league expanded to private institutions beginning in 2008. Over the last 30 years, former Cal U standout Kenney Toomer (1991-92) and Ramzee Stanton of West Chester (2002-03) were the only players to achieve the feat with the previous two occasions resulting in Athlete of the Year selections and each player being named a National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) All-American. Alston is the first player since Toomer to average at least 20 points and 10 rebounds in a season, a featured achieved only seven times in the league since the 2000-01 campaign (last: Micah Till of Slippery Rock in 2018-19).

In his first year as a starter, Alston ranks No. 16 in NCAA Division II in scoring with 21.4 points per game while totaling 641 points, the fifth-most points in the nation. He sits fifth in the league with a .551 field-goal percentage (260-of-472) while pacing the country with 260 field-goals made. Alston has scored at least 20 points in 17 games this year, highlighted by six 30-point games.

Alston sits No. 11 in the nation with 10.7 rebounds per game with a league-high 322 rebounds, which is fourth-most in the country and seventh-most in single-season school history. He has registered double-digit rebounds 19 times with six games of at least 15 rebounds. The Ohio native ranks second in the country with 18 double-doubles, which is five more than any other player in the PSAC this season. Alston sits second in the league with 1.97 blocks per game while his 59 blocks are tied for fourth-most in single-season program history. He has collected a career-high four blocks in seven games this year.

A 6-foot-6 forward, Alston advanced to the Bevo Francis Award Top 50 Watch List last month. He was recognized by the league office for weekly honors – PSAC West Athlete of the Week and PSAC West Defensive Athlete of the Week – a combined six times this year. Alston was the only player in the division to receive both honors multiple times throughout the regular season, receiving each accolade three times. His three selections as the PSAC West Athlete of the Week tied for the most in the division, while he was one of only two players tabbed PSAC West Defensive Athlete of the Week multiple times.

Pegram became just the sixth player in program history, and the first since Ishmieal Kamara (1999-03), to receive All-PSAC West honors three times in a career. He ranks second on the team and eighth in the league in scoring with 17.8 points per game while totaling over 500 points in back-to-back seasons. He scored at least 20 points in 10 games year, including a trio of 30-point games. As a senior, Pegram is shooting a career-high 43.3 percent (175-of-404) from the floor and sits fifth in the conference with a team-leading 62 three-pointers made.

A native of Maryland, Pegram ranks eighth in the league with 4.3 assists per game and sixth with 1.79 steals per game. He was one only one two players (Foster, IUP) in the 18-team league to rank among the top 10 in scoring, assists and steals this season. Pegram also is averaging a career-high 5.1 rebounds per game this season and has recorded a pair of double-doubles (points/rebounds; points/assists).

Pegram is the active leader in the PSAC with both 1,830 points and 217 steals in his career (including freshman year at Wheeling). He sits seventh all-time in school history with 1,615 points over his three years with the program. The 5-foot-11 guard also ranks among the top five in program history among the last 30 years with 220 three-pointers made, 389 assists and 187 steals in a career.

Collins continued his development as one of the premier two-way guards in the league. He ranks third on the team in scoring with 14.5 points per game while setting career highs in field-goal percentage, three-point percentage and free-throw percentage. Collins, who has posted five 20-point games this year, became the 34th player in program to reach the 1,000-point milestone this season.

A native of Virginia, Collins sits second on the team with 3.4 assists and 1.4 steals per game. He was typically the primary defender on the top wing on opposing teams throughout the season. In three meetings against Foster, Collins held the PSAC West Athlete of the Year to just 29 combined points from the floor on 13-of-44 shooting (29.5 percent) from the floor and a .167 three-point field-goal percentage (3-of-18).
