ABOUT THE VULCANS
• In his fourth year as head coach, Danny Sancomb has led Cal U to a combined 41-20 mark over the last two seasons following an eight-win campaign in 2019.

ABOUT THE SERIES

• The Yellow Jackets played only one team from the PSAC this season, suffering an 85-64 loss to conference runner-up Millersville in November.

BEEN AWHILE
Cal U and West Virginia State both returned to the NCAA Tournament this year for the first time in over a decade. In their last appearance, the Vulcans captured the 2008 East Regional Championship to advance to the Elite Eight for the third time in program history. Meanwhile, the Yellow Jackets last appeared in the NCAA Tournament in 2010, marking their fifth tournament berth in a seven-year span.

BALANCED EFFORT
The Vulcans featured five players scoring in double-digits in the opening-round win over Fairmont State. Sophomore Philip Alston registered his 19th double-double of the season in the victory, finishing with 29 points and 15 rebounds. Junior Zyan Collins added 20 points on 9-of-15 shooting, while senior Preston Boswell scored 15 points before fouling out. Freshmen Keith Palek III and Bryson Lucas both collected 10 points on Saturday.

BRACKET BUSTER
West Virginia State advanced in the NCAA Tournament on Saturday with a 103-94 overtime win against second-seeded West Liberty. The Yellow Jackets dropped both meetings against the Hilltoppers in the regular season, including an 86-84 loss at home. West Liberty entered the NCAA Tournament as the No. 2 team in the country and second seed in the Atlantic Region after capturing the MEC Championship last week.

MOVING UP
Sophomore forward Philip Alston continued to climb on the school's single-season record list following his performance against Fairmont State. He now sits fifth in single-season school history with 670 points, which are the most Ray Gutierrez totaled 777 points in the 1992-93 campaign. Alston also vaulted to fourth in single-season school history with 337 rebounds, the most since the late 1970s. The Ohio native ranks among the top three in the Atlantic Region this year with both 21.6 points and 10.9 rebounds per game.

ON THE GLASS
The Vulcans held a plus-24 rebounding advantage in the victory over Fairmont State, out-rebounding the Fighting Falcons by a 48-24 margin. Cal U totaled 14 offensive rebounds that led to 19 second-chance points. The plus-24 margin ranks as the second-best of the season for the Vulcans, who entered the NCAA Tournament ranked sixth in the PSAC in rebounding margin at plus-2.9 rebounds per game.

DO IT ALL
West Virginia State features one of the most versatile forwards in the Atlantic Region in sophomore Anthony Pittman. He sits second on the Yellow Jackets in scoring at 16.1 points per game and entered the NCAA Tournament ranked second in the MEC with 2.07 steals and 1.23 blocks per game, plus was fifth with 8.5 rebounds per game. Pittman repeated as an All-MEC First-Team selection this year after leading the league in both rebounds and blocks in a shortened 2020-21 campaign.

FAST AND FURIOUS
The Vulcans scored 95 points in the win over Fairmont State, which ties the school record for most in the NCAA Tournament. Cal U previously totaled 95 points in a win against Alabama A&M at the 1996 Elite Eight. Meanwhile, West Virginia State eclipsed the century mark in its overtime victory over West Liberty, the highest scoring team in NCAA Division II. The Yellow Jackets are averaging 86.0 points per game this season.

QUICK TRIGGER
West Virginia State senior Glen Abram entered the NCAA Tournament leading the Atlantic Region with both 90 three-point field-goals made and 273 three-point field-goals attempted, the second-most in the country. He is a three-time All-MEC First-Team honoree and is the active career scoring leader in the region with 2,035 points. Abram has been limited to single-digit points only twice this season.
