GRANVILLE, Ohio (Feb. 5) – The Vulcans captured the title at the Bob Shannon Invitational hosted by Denison on Saturday after winning four individual events and scoring in 11 events.
The California University of Pennsylvania men's track & field team earned the invitational title with 121 points. Ohio Wesleyan ranked second with 112 points, while Wooster placed third with 106 points. The field was comprised of seven teams, including six programs from Ohio.
Junior
Kristopher Lytle (Columbia, Md./Atholton) posted the victory in the 60-meter dash by one-hundredth of a second with a season-best time of 7.01 seconds in the finals. He also ran the fastest time in the preliminaries on Saturday after crossing the finish line in 7.12 seconds. Additionally, Lytle placed second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.86 seconds at Denison.
In his college debut, freshman
Aaron McPherson (Pittsburgh, Pa./Brentwood) qualified for the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships and placed second in the finals of the 60 meters with a time of 7.02 seconds. He also finished fourth in the long jump with a distance of 6.20 meters (20-4.25 feet) over the weekend.
Juniors
Tyrese Canada (Richmond, Va./Henrico) and
Tymir Jackson (Philadelphia, Pa./Overbrook) also finished third and fourth overall, respectively, in the 60 meters. Jackson captured the win in the 200 meters while in Ohio after posting a time of 22.79 seconds.
Senior
Jalen Cloud (Leechburg, Pa./Kiski) posted the victory in the triple jump with a conference-qualifying mark of 13.78 meters (45-2.5 feet) on his third attempt. Sophomore
Noah Bernarding (Cochranton, Pa./Cochranton) reached the league-qualifying standard and placed second in the 1-mile run with a time of 4 minutes, 29.82 seconds.
The 4x400-meter relay of Bernarding, Lytle, Cloud and Canada finished second after posting a time of 3:32.78 on Saturday.
Freshman
Logan Pfister (Fishertown, Pa./Chestnut Ridge) won the high jump for the second time this year after clearing 1.95 meters (6-4.75 feet) on his first attempt at the height. Junior
Michael Berdar (Centerville, Pa./Beth-Center) also reached the league mark by posting a height of 1.85 meters (6-0.75 feet).
Senior
Matt Collins (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield) set a personal best and qualified for the conference championships in the weight throw with a heave of 15.27 meters (50-1.25 feet) to finish second in the event. Classmate
John Franklin, Jr. (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) placed second in the 60-meter hurdles after placing second in the finals with a time of 8.67 seconds.
The Vulcans return to action on Friday, Feb. 11, when they travel to Staten Island, New York, to compete at the Fastrack National Invitational.
