MARIETTA, Ohio (Jan. 22) – The Vulcans opened the 2022 portion of their schedule by finishing second overall at the Pioneer Invitational hosted by Marietta (Ohio) on Saturday after scoring in 11 events, highlighted by three individual victories.
The California University of Pennsylvania men's track & field team placed second in the team standings with 113.5 points. Seton Hill captured the invitational title with 148 points, followed by Cal U and Glenville State in third place with 91 points. The event featured entries from 12 teams from across four states.
Freshman
Logan Pfister (Fishertown, Pa./Chestnut Ridge) claimed the win in the high jump after clearing 1.95 meters (6-4.75 feet) on his initial attempt at the height. He currently sits second on the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) performance list in the event with a mark of 2.00 meters (6-6.75 feet) last month. Junior
Michael Berdar (Centerville, Pa./Beth-Center) cleared 1.90 meters (6-2.75) on his second attempt to place second in the high jump on Saturday.
Junior
Tymir Jackson (Philadelphia, Pa./Overbrook) won the 200-meter dash by four-hundredths of a second after crossing the finish line with a time of 22.72 seconds. He also placed third in the finals of the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.62 seconds after finishing first in the preliminaries while in Ohio.
Senior
Avery Boea-Gisler (Pittsburgh, Pa./Serra Catholic) recorded the victory in the 300-meter dash on Saturday with a time of 36.02 seconds. He also scored in the 200 meters by placing fifth overall with a time of 23.51 seconds.
Fellow senior
Jalen Cloud (Leechburg, Pa./Kiski) qualified for the league championships and finished third in the long jump with a distance of 6.67 meters (21-10.75 feet). He also placed second overall in the triple jump while in Ohio after clearing 13.71 meters (44-11.75 feet).
Senior
John Franklin, Jr. (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) placed second in both the preliminaries and finals of the 55-meter hurdles, recording a time of 8.01 seconds in the finals. With track conversion, he reached the conference-qualifying standard for the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.63 seconds.
Junior
Kristopher Lytle (Columbia, Md./Atholton) scored in a pair of sprint events on Saturday. He finished fourth in the 55 meters with a time of 6.65 seconds and crossed the finish line in 23.37 seconds to place fourth overall in the 200 meters.
Seniors
Matt Collins (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield) and
Sam Rothstein (Sykesville, Md./Century) scored in both the shot put and weight throw while in Ohio. Collins set a personal best and finished fourth in the shot put with a mark of 14.01 meters (45-11.75 feet), plus placed fourth in the shot put with a heave of 12.78 meters (41-11.25 feet). Rothstein finished seventh in both events on Saturday with a distance of 12.12 meters (39-9.25) in the weight throw.
The Vulcans return to action next weekend when they compete at the National Mid-Major Invitational hosted by Youngstown State on Jan. 28-29.
