Alston receives defensive league laurels

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. (Nov. 29) – Behind a third-straight double-double, California University of Pennsylvania sophomore forward Philip Alston (Columbus, Ohio/Westerville North) was named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West Defensive Athlete of the Week on Monday afternoon.

Alston posted 10 rebounds and set a career high with four blocks, plus added one steal, as the Vulcans earned a 70-67 victory at Shippensburg in non-conference play on Tuesday night. He also scored 23 points on 9-of-16 from the floor, including three three-pointers, to mark his third-consecutive game with at least 20 points. Alston collected four blocks against the Raiders, which were the preseason favorite in the PSAC East after advancing to the finals of the 2020 PSAC Tournament.

A native of Ohio, Alston ranks fifth in the league with both 9.6 rebounds and 1.60 blocks per game, plus sits second in the PSAC with 48 total rebounds. The 6-foot-6 sophomore also ranks second in the conference in scoring this year at 24.6 points per game behind a .584 field-goal percentage, which is sixth-best in the league.

Alston has claimed league honors in consecutive weeks, as he was selected the PSAC West Athlete of the Week last Monday.

The Vulcans remain idle before beginning PSAC Crossover play with a pair of road games this weekend, starting on Friday, Dec. 3, at Bloomsburg with tip-off set for 7:30 p.m.
