SPOTLIGHT

Bloomsburg v. Cal U (NCAA Tournament) – 1996 – Lilley Field
The Vulcans entered the NCAA Tournament on a 27-game winning streak before losing their opening game of the three-team regional hosted at Lilley Field. Cal U featured 10 All-PSAC West selections with first baseman Jen Wagner being chosen the PSAC West Athlete of the Year, while pitcher Danielle Penner boasted a 23-2 record and a 0.57 ERA. The Huskies were the national runner-up in 1995 and entered the tournament having won five of the last six regional championships. Bloomsburg was led by the tandem of two-time All-American shortstop Jen Lefever and pitcher Christie Kittle, who posted a 30-10 record as a freshman.

 


Cal U 7, Bloomsburg 1
The Vulcans scored runs in each of the opening five innings to earn a 7-1 victory and claim the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Region Championship for the second time in three years. Penner registered the complete-game victory after scattering four hits with a solo homer in the fifth and tallied 10 strikeouts with no walks. Wagner delivered a pair of hits and collected three RBI, while catcher Dana Boyer added a pair of hits and scored one run. Left fielder Colleen Hahn belted a solo homer, her seventh of the year, in the fifth. The Vulcans advanced to the NCAA National Championships and posted a 1-2 record while in Emporia, Kansas, highlighted by an extra-inning 1-0 victory over top-seeded Wisconsin-Parkside.
