CLARION, Pa. (April 6) – Playing their fifth match in nine days, the Vulcans battled to a 4-3 victory at Clarion on Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play.
With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania tennis team improves to 5-7 overall behind a 1-2 record in league action. It marks the first conference victory for the Vulcans since the 2016-17 campaign. Meanwhile, the Golden Eagles fall to 1-7 this season with a 0-3 mark in divisional play.
The Vulcans swept doubles play for just the second time this season to earn the doubles point. At the first postion, freshmen
Jo Weisen (Bereldange, Luxembourg/Sportlycee) and
Carolin Ganahl (Grafing, Germany/Gymnasium Grafing) posted a 6-3 win against Alivia Arnold and Vinisha Reddy. Junior
Charlie Gallagher (Kennett Square, Pa./Octorara) and senior
Elizabeth Wohar (California, Pa./California) tallied a 7-6 victory at second doubles over Michelle Petrilla and Katie Benson. Cal U closed out the doubles session when senior
Emily Suckling (Cheltenham, Australia/Mentone Girls' Secondary College) and junior
McKenzie Wilson (Traralgon, Australia/St. Paul's Anglican) earned a 6-1 win against Hailey Germanoski and Sarah Kirmeyer at the third slot.
Cal U completed the conference victory after splitting the six singles matches on Saturday. Weisen claimed a 6-0, 6-4 victory versus Arnold at first singles, while Ganahl earned a 6-0, 6-1 win against Reddy in the second slot. At the third position, Gallagher suffered a 6-0, 7-5 loss to Benson and Wohar fell by a 6-4, 4-6, 10-7 count versus Petrilla at fourth singles. Suckling secured a 6-0, 6-0 win over Germanoski in the fifth slot. Freshman
Fulvia Camargo (South Park, Pa./South Park) dropped a 7-6, 6-1 contest at the sixth position against Kirmeyer.
Cal U is idle for over a week until returning to divisional play versus IUP at Roadman Park on April 17.
