BLOOMSBURG, Pa. (Sept. 30) – The tandem of freshmen
Carolin Ganahl (Grafing, Germany/Gymnasium Grafing) and
Jo Weisen (Bereldange, Luxembourg/Sportlycee) advanced to the finals of the doubles flight on Sunday before finishing as runner-up during the second day of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Individual Championships.
Ganahl and Weisen opened play on Sunday with an 8-4 victory against Mariana Valenzuela and Thais Andreottia of IUP in the semifinals. The Cal U doubles team then suffered an 8-4 loss in the championship match to Kayla Frost and Sangeeta Roopan of Mercyhurst. Ganahl and Weisen finished the weekend with a 3-1 record and became the first doubles team to advance to the league finals since the fall of 2014 when the Vulcans boasted both the doubles champion and runner-up.
In singles play, Weisen dropped a 6-4, 7-5 match in the quarterfinals to IUP's Katya Minchenkova, who was an All-PSAC Second-Team selection last year after tallying 14 dual match wins. Minchenkova will play in the finals of the event tomorrow, Monday, Oct. 1, against Lacey Cohen of Slippery Rock. Weisen posted a 2-1 mark in the singles flight while playing at the league championships for the first time in her career.
The Vulcans return to dual play this weekend when they host a pair of league crossover matches, beginning on Friday, Oct. 5, against Shippensburg at 4:30 p.m.
