Tennis advances to second day at league event

Singles Bracket (Day 1)  I  Doubles Bracket (Day 1)

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. (Sept. 29) – Freshmen Carolin Ganahl (Grafing, Germany/Gymnasium Grafing) and Jo Weisen (Bereldange, Luxembourg/Sportlycee) advanced to the semifinals of the doubles flight on Saturday during the opening day of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Individual Championships.

Additionally, Weisen advanced to the quarterfinals of the singles bracket at the league championships.

Ganahl and Weisen started the event with an 8-5 victory against Rylee Power and Alyssa Skulsky of West Chester. The duo then posted an 8-5 win in the quarterfinals versus Viola Lugmayr and Lois Page of Slippery Rock. Ganahl and Weisen will face the IUP tandem of Mariana Valenzuela and Thais Andreottia in the semifinals of the event tomorrow, Sunday, Sept. 30, at 9 a.m.

In singles, Weisen blanked Skulsky of West Chester in the opening round by a 6-0, 6-0 count before claiming a 6-0, 6-1 victory versus Taylor Capoferri of Bloomsburg. She advances to face Katya Minchenkova of IUP, an All-PSAC West Second-Team selection last year, in the quarterfinals of the singles championship on Sunday at 2 p.m.

Ganahl claimed a 6-2, 6-2 win against Cameron Beer of Seton Hill in the first round before suffering a 6-1, 6-4 loss to Julia Newman of IUP in the second round.

The Vulcans return to action tomorrow during the second day of the PSAC Individual Championships, starting at 9 a.m.
