INDIANA, Pa. (April 10) – Facing the top-ranked team in the Atlantic Region, the Vulcans suffered a 9-0 loss at IUP in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play on Tuesday afternoon.
With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania tennis team falls to 0-4 overall and in conference play. Meanwhile, the Crimson Hawks improve to 13-5 overall and 4-0 in league action. The Crimson Hawks are slotted first in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Atlantic Region rankings after capturing their first PSAC Championship last season.
IUP took an early 3-0 lead after sweeping doubles play following a forfeit at the third position. At first doubles, junior
Elizabeth Wohar (California, Pa./California) and sophomore
Charlie Gallagher (Kennett Square, Pa./Octorara) suffered an 8-0 loss to Jarka Petercakova and Luise von Agris. Freshmen
Emilee Leydig (Windber, Pa./Windber) and
Alexa Uhlyar (Finleyville, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) dropped an 8-0 contest at the second slot to Katya Minchenkova and Nicole Beidacki.
The Crimson Hawks completed the match sweep by winning all six singles matches with forfeits at the fifth and sixth slots.Wohar was downed by a 6-0, 6-0 count at the first position by Petercakova and Gallagher suffered a 6-0, 6-0 loss at the second slot to von Agris, who is the all-time winningest singles player in IUP history. Leydig dropped a 6-0, 6-1 match at third singles to Minchenkova and Uhlyar fell by by a 6-0, 6-0 margin to Beidacki at the fourth slot.
Cal U returns to action on Saturday, April 14, when it hosts Slippery Rock in divisional play at 12 p.m.
