CALIFORNIA (April 9) – The California University of Pennsylvania tennis team swept doubles play for the first time this season on Sunday afternoon and posted a 7-2 victory against Seton Hill at Roadman Park in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action.
With the win, the Vulcans improve to 4-6 this season with a 2-2 mark in divisional play. Meanwhile, the Griffins drop to 8-9 overall and 2-3 in league action.
Cal U opened the afternoon by winning all three matches in singles play. Seniors Veronika Mikulis (Otterburn Park, Quebec/Heritage Regional) and Alyssa Savill (Holbrook, Autralia/Billabong) earned their fourth-straight win with an 8-4 victory over Paula Carvajalino and Madison DeBone at first doubles. Senior Jasi Witherspoon (Macon, Ga./Howard) and redshirt sophomore
Katie Olson (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Dana Hills) posted an 8-5 win over Diana Carvajalino and Kaelyn Zak at the second position, while sophomores
Elizabeth Wohar (California, Pa./California) and
Emily Suckling (Cheltenham, Australia/Mentone Girls' Secondary College) claimed the victory at third doubles via forfeit.
The Vulcans clinched the match victory with four wins in singles play, including three via straight sets. Witherspoon recorded a 6-1, 6-2 win over Paula Carvajalino at first position, while Mikulis posted a 6-0, 6-1 victory over regionally-ranked Diana Carvajalino at the second slot. Savill earned a 6-2, 6-1 victory over DeBone at third singles for her team-leading 10th win of the season. Olson dropped a 6-2, 6-3 decision against Kaelyn Zak at fourth position and Wohar fell by a 6-3, 6-0 count to Salazar at the fifth slot. Suckling claimed a win via forfeit at sixth singles.
Cal U returns to action on Tuesday, April 11, when it hosts No. 35 IUP in PSAC West play at 3 p.m.
