SOUTH PARK, Pa. (April 7) – Despite winning a pair of doubles matches, the Vulcans suffered a 5-4 loss against West Virginia Wesleyan on Friday afternoon at Glen Creek Tennis Club.
With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania tennis team falls to 3-6 overall. Meanwhile, West Virginia Wesleyan improves to 10-5 this season while playing its third match of the spring.
The Vulcans took a 2-1 lead after the doubles session on Friday. At the first position, seniors Veronika Mikulis (Otterburn Park, Quebec/Heritage Regional) and Alyssa Savill (Holbrook, Australia/Billabong) claimed an 8-2 victory over Cecila Martinez Oliver and Estel Fernandez. Katie Olson (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Dana Hills) recorded an 8-3 win at second doubles against Rebekka Heigermoser and Mariona Junyer. At the third slot, sophomore

Charlie Gallagher (Kennett Square, Pa./Octorara) suffered an 8-1 loss to Paula Pimenta and Lauren Shelton.
West Virginia Wesleyan earned the match victory by winning four matches in singles play. Witherspoon was blanked by a 6-0, 6-0 count at the first position by Pimenta. Mikulis tallied a 6-0, 6-0 win over Martinez Oliver at the second slot and Savill dropped a 4-6, 7-6 (10-7) match to Heigermoser at third singles. Olson collected a 6-2, 6-2 victory at the fourth position over Fernadez for her seventh win of the year. Wohar fell by a 6-0, 6-1 margin to Junyer at the fifth slot and Gallahger was forced to retire at sixth singles due to injury.
Cal U returns to action on Sunday, April 9, when it hosts Seton Hill in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play at 2 p.m.
