CALIFORNIA (March 25) – The California University of Pennsylvania tennis team opened Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play on Saturday afternoon by suffering an 8-1 loss to No. 46 Mercyhurst at Roadman Park.
With the loss, the Vulcans fall to 2-4 this season and 0-1 in divisional play after playing their third contest in six days. Meanwhile, the Lakers, which are ranked second in the Atlantic Region, improves to 9-1 overall and 1-0 in league action.
Mercyhurst swept the doubles session on Saturday to take a 3-0 lead in the match. Seniors Veronika Mikulis (Otterburn Park, Quebec/Heritage Regional) and Alyssa Savill (Holbrook, Australia/Billabong) dropped an 8-5 match at the first position to Adrianna Jeffress and Kayla Frost. Sophomore

Katie Olson (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Dana Hills) suffered an 8-1 loss to the No. 25 tandem of Annie Baich and Selena Gomez de Segura at the second slot. Freshman

Emily Suckling (Cheltenham, Australia/Mentone Girls' Secondary College) fell by an 8-0 count at third doubles to Adina Spahalic and Alexia Nay.
The Lakers claimed victories in five of the six singles matches, as each match was decided in straight sets. Mikulis suffered a 6-0, 6-0 loss at the first slot to Gomez de Segura, who is ranked No. 20 in the nation and is the reigning PSAC West Athlete of the Year. Savill recorded the lone win for Cal U in the match by claiming a 7-5, 6-1 victory over regionally-ranked Frost at the second position. Olson dropped a 6-3, 6-2 match at the third position to Carmen Mantecon Duro and Wohar fell by a 6-0, 6-1 count to Nay at fourth singles. Suckling suffered a 6-0, 6-0 loss to Jeffress at the fifth slot and Gallagher dropped a 6-0, 6-0 match to Nay at the sixth position.
Cal U returns to action on Tuesday, March 28, when it travels to face Edinboro in PSAC West play at 4 p.m.
