WEST LIBERTY, Pa. (March 24) – Playing their second match in four days, the Vulcans suffered a 5-4 loss at West Liberty in Atlantic region play on Friday afternoon.
With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania tennis team falls to 2-3 this season. Meanwhile, West Liberty improves to 9-4 overall after being tabbed No. 10 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) regional rankings.
The Hilltoppers took a 2-1 lead after the doubles session on Friday. Seniors Veronika Mikulis (Otterburn Park, Quebec/Heritage Regional) and Alyssa Savill (Holbrook, Australia/Billabong) earned an 8-4 victory at the first position over Raquel Cabero and Laura Huwe. Redshirt sophomore

Elizabeth Wohar (California, Pa./California) fell by an 8-5 count to Ana Berbel and Alaina Pauley at second doubles, while freshman
Charlie Gallagher (Kennett Square, Pa./Octorara) and sophomore
Emily Suckling (Cheltenham, Australia/Mentone Girls' Secondary College) suffered an 8-1 loss at the third slot to Andrea Puga and Lisa Nachtwey.
Cal U and West Liberty split the six singles matches with the Vulcans winning each of the contests in the top half of the session. Mikulis registered a 6-2, 6-4 win at the first position against Cabero and Savill collected a 6-2, 7-6 victory over Huwe at second singles. Olson tallied a 2-6, 7-5 (10-7) win at third singles against Berbel and Wohar dropped a 6-0, 6-1 contest to Puga at the fourth position. Suckling fell by a 6-0, 6-2 count at fifth singles to Pauley and Gallagher suffered a 6-0, 6-0 loss to Ekaterina Pinchuk at the sixth slot.
The Vulcans return to action tomorrow, Saturday, March 25, when they open Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play by hosting nationally-ranked Mercyhurst at Roadman Park with the match set for 2 p.m.
