CALIFORNIA (April 17) – The No. 18 Vulcans closed the regular season by suffering an 8-1 loss to Division I-opponent Duquesne at Roadman Park on Sunday afternoon, which snapped their 14-match winning streak.
With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania tennis team finishes the regular season with a 15-3 overall record while suffering its first loss since February 6. Meanwhile, Duquesne improves to 15-5 this season.
The Vulcans started the day by dropping all three doubles matches. The No. 12 duo of senior
Kiefer Shaw (Westmount, Quebec/Centennial) and sophomore
Lena Dimmer (Wallendorf-Pont, Luxembourg/Lycee Classique) ended their 12-match win streak after falling 8-4 to Kylie Isaacs and Julianne Herman at first doubles, while junior
Jasi Witherspoon (Macon, Ga./Howard) and freshman
Holly Bennett (Kingston, United Kingdom/Sussex Downs-Lewes) dropped their match at the second position by 8-6 count to Ally Miller and Zuzanna Stelmaszak. Juniors Veronica Mikulis (Otterburn Park, Quebec/Heritage Regional) and
Alyssa Savill (Holbrook, Australia/Billabong) fell 8-3 to Megan Wasson and Sarah Shashura at third doubles to complete the sweep.
Cal U dropped five of six singles matches with only one match going to three sets. Shaw suffered a 6-1, 6-0 loss to Isaacs at first singles, while Dimmer, who is No. 30 in the nation, snapped her nine-match win streak by falling 6-2, 6-1 to Herman at the second slot. Witherspoon dropped a 2-6, 6-0, 10-4 match to Maddy Adams at the third position, which also ended her streak of nine-consecutive wins. Mikulis dropped her match by a 6-3, 6-3 margin to Wasson at fourth singles, while Bennett recorded the lone win for the Vulcans by claiming a 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (7-2) victory over Shashura at the fifth slot to win her sixth-straight match. Savill ended her 11-match win streak after falling 6-3, 7-5 to Stelmaszak at the sixth slot.
Following a first-round bye, the Vulcans return to action in the semifinals of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament on April 29 in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania.
