Vulcans record sweep at Seton Hill, 9-0

GREENSBURG, Pa. (April 10) – The No. 18 California University of Pennsylvania tennis team remained in a tie for first place in the divisional standings with a 9-0 victory over Seton Hill in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action at the Greensburg Racquet Club on Sunday morning.

With the win, the Vulcans improve to 13-2 overall and extend their winning streak to 12 matches. Cal U is tied with IUP for first place in league play with a 4-0 mark and the two teams are scheduled to play each other on Tuesday, April 12. Meanwhile, the Griffins fall to 7-7 this season with a 1-2 record in divisional action.

Cal U swept doubles play against Seton Hill despite two teams moving up in the lineup while the remaining tandem played together for the first time. At the first position, junior Jasi Witherspoon (Macon, Ga./Howard) and freshman Holly Bennett (Kingston, United Kingdom/Sussex Downs-Lewes) earned an 8-3 victory over Isidora Knezevic and Sara Ruiz. Juniors Veronika Mikulis (Otterburn Park, Quebec/Heritage Regional) and Alyssa Savill (Holbrook, Australia/Billabong) collected an 8-6 win at second doubles against Paula Carvajalino and Madison DeBone. In their first match as a doubles team, senior Kiefer Shaw (Westmount, Quebec/Centennial) and freshman Jacqueline Olivia (Bandung, Indonesia/SMAK 1 BPK Penabur) posted an 8-1 victory over Alisha Torretti and Mary Baich at the third slot.

In singles play, the Vulcans won all six matches for the fourth-straight time and the sixth time during the 12-match winning streak. Shaw registered a 6-4, 6-0 victory at the first position against Knezevic, while Witherspoon moved up to second singles and outlasted Ruiz by a 7-5, 2-6, 11-9 count. Mikulis extended her winning streak in singles to 12 matches with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 victory over DeBone at the third slot. Bennett earned a 6-2, 6-3 win at the fourth position against Carvajalino and Savill blanked Torretti by a 6-0, 6-0 margin at fifth singles. Olivia posted a 6-2, 6-0 win at the sixth slot over Baich.

Cal U returns to action on Tuesday when it travels to face IUP at 2 p.m.
