SOUTH PARK, Pa. (March 20) – Playing for the second time in three days, the No. 14 Vulcans earned an 8-1 win against Westminster, a NCAA Division III program, at the Glen Creek Tennis Club on Sunday afternoon.
With the victory, the California University of Pennsylvania tennis team extended its winning streak to seven matches and improved to 8-2 overall. Meanwhile, the Titans drop to 10-3 this season while playing for the first time since securing a share of the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Championship in October.
The Vulcans swept doubles play for the third-straight match and lost only a combined five games. At the first position, junior Kiefer Shaw (Westmount, Quebec/Centennial) and sophomore Lena Dimmer (Wallendorf-Pont, Luxembourg/Lycée Classique) posted an 8-2 victory over Maria Turiano and Sydney Sterner, while junior Jasi Witherspoon (Macon, Ga./Howard) and freshman Holly Bennett (Kingston, United Kingdom/Sussex Downs-Lewes) collected an 8-2 win at the second slot against Gabby Eaborn and Stephanie Homitz. Freshman Jacqueline Olivia (Bandung, Indonesia/SMAK 1 BPK Penabur) and junior Veronika Mikulis (Otterburn Park, Quebec/Heritage Regional) rounded out the session at third doubles with an 8-1 victory over Christijana Vucenovic and Patricia Pivaronas.
In singles play, Cal U earned five straight-set victories and lost only four games in the five matches. Shaw posted a 6-1, 6-0 win at the first position over Eaborn and Dimmer tallied a 6-1, 6-0 victory against Sterner at the second slot. Witherspoon blanked Vucenovic at third singles by a 6-0, 6-0 count and Mikulis collected a 6-0, 6-1 win over Turiano at the fourth position. Elizabeth Wohar (Brownsville, Pa./California) suffered a 6-0, 6-0 loss to Pivaronas at the sixth slot.
The Vulcans return to action on Tuesday, March 22, when they host West Liberty at 3 p.m.
