Cal U extends win streak at Davis & Elkins, 8-1

ELKINS, W.Va. (March 18) – The No. 14 California University of Pennsylvania tennis team extended its winning streak to six matches with an 8-1 victory at Davis & Elkins in non-conference play on Friday afternoon.

With the win, the Vulcans improve to 7-2 this season with their last loss on Feb. 6. Meanwhile, the Senators fall to 4-8 overall.

Cal U swept doubles play for the fourth time during their winning streak on Friday. At the first position, junior Kiefer Shaw (Westmount, Quebec/Centennial) and sophomore Lena Dimmer (Wallendorf-Pont, Luxembourg/Lycée Classique) rolled to an 8-1 victory against Amanda Fewster and Haileight Carper, while junior Jasi Witherspoon (Macon, Ga./Howard) and freshman Holly Bennett (Kingston, United Kingdom/Sussex Downs-Lewes) earned an 8-2 win at second doubles against Elise Simon and Kelsie Roby. Junior Veronika Mikulis (Otterburn Park, Quebec/Heritage Regional) and freshman Elizabeth Wohar (Brownsville, Pa./California), who was making her college debut, outlasted Halima Michael and Marlene Ridgway at the third slot by a 9-8 margin.

In singles play, the Vulcans earned all five of their victories against the Senators in straight sets. Shaw posted a 6-3, 6-1 win at the first position over Simon and Dimmer recorded her team-leading 13th victory of the year at the second slot with a 6-2, 6-1 win against Michael. Witherspoon tallied a 6-3, 6-0 win at third singles against Carper, while Mikulis extended her winning streak to six matches by blanking Roby at the fourth position by a 6-0, 6-0 count. Bennett collected a 6-0, 6-2 victory at the fifth slot against Fewster for her seventh-consecutive win and Wohar suffered a 6-1, 6-1 loss to Ridgway at sixth singles.

Cal U returns to action on Sunday, March 20, when it hosts Westminster (Pa.) at Glen Creek Tennis Club in South Park, Pennsylvania, at 4 p.m.
