INSTITUTE, W.Va. (Oct. 12) – in a rematch from last year's NCAA Tournament and a meeting of defending-conference champions, the Vulcans suffered a 6-3 in-region loss to West Virginia State on Wednesday afternoon.
With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania tennis team closes the fall season with a 2-1 record while playing the reigning champions in both the Mountain East Conference (MEC) and Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC). Meanwhile, the Yellow Jackets improve to 6-1 this fall.
WVSU took a 2-1 lead after the doubles session with the three matches being decided by a total eight games. At the first position, senior
Jasi Witherspoon (Macon, Ga./Howard) and redshirt sophomore
Katie Olson (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Dana Hills) posted an 8-6 victory over Laura Isbey and Marta Yevstakhevych. Seniors
Veronika Mikulis (Otterburn Park, Quebec/Heritage Regional) and
Alyssa Savill (Holbrook, Australia/Billabong) dropped an 8-5 match at second doubles to Kierstin Hensley and Nina Dillwald, while freshman
Brigid Washburn (Greentown, Pa./Wallenpaupack) and redshirt freshman
Maura Gray (Pittsburgh, Pa./Keystone Oaks) suffered an 8-5 loss to Kayla McKnight and Lindsay Goff at the third slot.
The Yellow Jackets completed the match victory after winning four singles matches in straight sets. The session opened at the fifth position when Grey was dealt a 6-1, 6-3 loss by McKnight before Withspoon suffered a 6-0, 6-2 loss at the first slot to Isbey, the reigning MEC Freshman of the Year. Savill then rallied for a 6-3, 2-6, 1-0 victory over Yevstakhevych at third singles. WVSU responded by clinching the match at the second position when Mikulis dropped a 6-3, 6-2 contest to Hensley. The Yellow Jackets later added to their lead with a 6-0, 6-0 win when Goff blanked Washburn at sixth singles. Olson rounded out the match with a 6-3, 2-6, 1-0 victory at the fourth position.
