Vulcans advance past WVSU to Round of 16, 5-0

CALIFORNIA (May 3) – The top-seeded Vulcans registered a 5-0 win against fourth-seeded West Virginia State at Roadman Park on Sunday morning in the second round of the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional Tournament.

With the victory, the California University of Pennsylvania tennis team extends its win streak to six matches and improves to 15-3 overall. The win also advances the Vulcans to the Round of 16 for the ninth-straight year. Cal U will face an advancing team from the South Central Region in Surprise, Arizona, on May 13. Meanwhile, the Yellow Jackets end the season with a 14-5 record after making an eighth-straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

The Vulcans swept doubles play for the sixth-consecutive match and the 11th time this season. Sophomore Veronika Mikulis (Otterburn Park, Quebec/Heritage Regional) and freshman Lena Dimmer (Wallendorf-Pont, Luxembourg/Lycée Classique) collected their 10th doubles win of the season after opening play with an 8-2 victory at the third position against Nina Dillwald and Brenda Cumpa. At the first slot, senior Jesse Burrell (Perth, Australia/Presbyterian Ladies' College) and sophomore Kiefer Shaw (Westmount, Quebec/Centennial) posted an 8-6 win over Brooke Campbell and Brittany Franco, the third-ranked doubles team in the region. Senior Ramona Czakon (Trier, Germany/Tampereen Lyseon Lukio) and sophomore Mariela Sarinana (Mexico City, Mexico/Miraflores) completed the doubles sweep with an 8-6 victory at the third position against Charlotte Sandy and Diana Cotoros.

In singles play, Sarinana collected her team-leading 15th victory by collecting a 6-3, 6-1 win at the fourth position versus Dillwald. Dimmer then clinched the match victory on Sunday with a 6-3, 621 win over Sandy at third singles.

Cal U has advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament seven times in the last eight years, including last season when it lost to No. 6 Saint Leo (Fla.).
